Purchased car part from UK. Shipping outrageously expensive. Buyer cannot give refund.

I recently purchased a car part from the UK. I’m located in the US and this website had a great deal on the part compared to domestic suppliers. On the website I ordered the they state that the part is made to order and to allow 10 working days. A few days go by and I then get an email asking me when my courier will pick up the part. I was a bit confused because during checkout the website would not let me choose my any shipping method and to just type in my address. So I did and assumed that the price included shipping the product. Under the delivery information section it states.

All Roll Cages are Secured onto a 1200x1000mm pallet and delivered via Pallet Online on 2-3 working day delivery as standard.
Most of our products have a 10 working day lead time before dispatch but please contact us if you have any queries regarding delivery timescales.

I wasn’t aware that I had to choose my own courier to pick up the part because the website didn’t make that very clear even after I placed my order. The shipping is almost double the price of the product I paid for. I asked them to refund and they said that cannot give me refund, “ I am sorry, these items are made bespoke for every purchase, we cannot offer returns on an item without problems, this isn't a product we sell enough of,” “Yes that's because there is no shipping option for the USA, we cannot get quotes worth using, I had assumed you were to arrange collection via some sort of courier.” Then tells me that I selected local shipping on the site, but that’s the only option there was, I wasn’t able to deselect or select it anyways.
Overall just very confusing.

I paid through PayPal and was wondering if anybody has any insight into this and whether or not I am entitled to a return or not.

You will be very lucky to get anything back. You are reliant on US laws on made to order items.

It doesn’t make a lot of sense to assume that international shipping of a very large item like this is included in the price, especially when the only shipping option is ‘local’ just because you were able to type in your address doesn’t mean anything. The website doesn’t need to tell you how to get the item, that’s your problem, not theirs. They are happy to sell it to anyone in the world as long as they sort out the courier.

It’s really not that confusing. If ‘local’ is the only option on an American website then clearly that does not apply to us in the UK.

The buyer is in the US, the seller is in the UK.
  • OP you have c*cked up badly so all you can do is either ship the part or ask the manufacturer to make the part available for sale. Perhaps contact a club for that marque of car and offer the part for sale at a discount to recover as much as you can.

If I was buying anything in the USA the first thing I would be checking is what P+P would cost. I wouldn't assume free P+P to the USA would apply to overseas (I probably wouldn't even assume free P+P was available to Alaska and Hawaii)

a 1.2m x 1m pallet with likely non stackable will be outrageously expensive because its awkward to ship.

can't see how, under UK custom goods laws you will be able to get your money back - you might need PayPal specialists on this - as I don't even think they will help you with a refund.

Btw your post makes no sense, you agreed to local shipping and also decided that meant intercontinental? I think it was pretty clear this wasn't going to be included to the USA...

Woops that was a miss. Late night and confused with the title about ‘buyer’ not refunding is my excuse :rotfl:

Check if there is a local delivery cost. (£x)
Look for specialist car forums / groups for the car type in the UK and advertise it for sale with £x cost for local delivery from location or courier at purchasers cost
    List on eBay/gumtree similar...

If local delivery was the only option given...that would be the time to stop and enquire before proceeding with the order rather than make assumptions.

Nevertheless, I've seen the converse often enough i.e. US websites which don't offer international shipping in their delivery options. I wouldn't assume I could just pay the US domestic price and expect them to throw in international shipping - especially if it's something pallet-sized!

Also whichever shipper is ultimately used will also have to factor in all import charges , taxes and the newish State tax that is charged.

If this had been a purchase to the UK from the US and not the other way round then PayPal wouldn't help for several reasons , firstly the bespoke nature of the product and secondly buyers are expected to understand import costs and taxes . This might therefore be a question for a US forum.
