Employee playing games at work

Options
I run a small company, I’m currently on holiday for the first and only time this year and have an employee covering, getting orders out and running the day to day of the business. There is always lots to do, unlimited amounts of work.

So my shock horror, 4 days I’ve been away and employee decided it would be a good idea to start playing championship manager computer game. 50% of his time at work has been logged playing this so far!

What would you do? :rotfl:

Formal warning upon your return to be placed on record with the clear indication of dismissal should it be repeated.
(Although I could be wrong, I often am.)

    Gross misconduct Immediate dismissal.

Real reason : you don't want to employ stupid people.

    This employee is doubly stupid

    1. Spending 50% of his time playing silly computer games

    2. Being caught spending 50% of his time playing silly computer games

IMHO 2. is a hanging offence!

I mean it's really up to you, based on your replies in this chat, you don't seem to care.

If there was genuinely work to do and I found out one of my employees had been playing games 50% of the time over four days (and it makes it worse you was able to find this out), I would dismiss them for gross misconduct without a second thought.

I see my staff on Facebook occasionally, I don't care, I check my personal accounts from time to time also, but playing a game for half the day through the week is taking the !!!!.
    Know what you don't

    Massive assumption to make!

It’s incredibly serious. I’m lucky that the company is in very good shape otherwise I wouldn’t be able to see the funny side of the posters comment.

I’m leaning towards immediate dismissal if I’m honest.

How do you know he is playing the game? (Just curious)

Championship Manager is not a "real-time" game so he could be playing it on the side whilst completing his work; if everything is getting done as expected (I know you say "unlimited work" but he must have deliverables?) then I would be a little more lenient than instant dismissal.

Is he accomplishing all his work?

If so who cares what else he does?

If not then maybe do something!

Nothing worse than the boredom of a job that you hit targets for and they want you to pretend to work the rest of the time (yes consider more work in that case but do not moan if all the current wortk is done).

Whatever you do, make sure you follow correct procedure, so you need to investigate before deciding if to invite the person to a disciplinary.
