Hawaii holiday with cruise

My aunt would love to see Hawaii. She’s seen one with Daily Mailtravel. It’s three days at Waikiki Beach, 8 day cruise around the islands and 3 nights in Las Vegas on way home. It’s £3199pp. Is there any way of booking this yourself or is it cheaper as a package? Even a direct holiday to Hawaii with cruise would be good.
Any advice is appreciated thanks.

Don't know, but I'd bet there will be a single supplement if it's only your aunt going.

I am an advocate of the DIY option where holidays are concerned but sometimes packages work out better value and convenient.

£3199 may seem high but only you know the full details of the package and dates. Is your Aunt travelling solo? That will probably have an impact on cost if so. Getting to Hawaii is on the more expensive side compared to other US destinations, so is accommodation.

Start by searching for flights i.e Google flights give the option for multi trip flights. Then search for the cruise and the hotels prices then finally the Las Vegas hotels.

Remember booking through a travel company as a package you should be covered and they should help if things go wrong with the itinerary, check if the travel company is fully bonded. Doing it yourself you don't usually have that backup.

Once you have added all the elements together you may not be far off the package price.

Also consider if the package includes any transfers, meals and gratuities on board ship. All these add up f you are creating a package yourself.

That's a ridiculous price. Generally, long haul packages are a rip-off. The US is easy to DIY. Look on skyscanner for flights (usually best booking direct with the airline), look on booking sites like booking.com, hotels.com trivago etc for hotels and you can google for local cruises if that's what she really wants but day boat trips and/or flights between the islands may be better value.

What in particular interests her about Hawaii, there's a massive difference between Waikiki beach surrounded by tower block hotels and some of the less visited islands which are less commercialised.
  • Does the cruise start and end in Hawaii, as your outline suggests ?

Those from the US west coast are 4 days at sea to just get there - fine if you like such a length of consecutive days onboard, but obviously not so attractive if you don't.

Also that's a really long haul flight from the UK, whatever way you do it.

I'd price it out separately and see how that compares for the same date not forgetting to do like for like of course, I don't think you will find much cheaper.

Cruise line is presumably NCL, flights try Skyscanner, hotel try Booking.com.

A good travel agent such as Cruiseclubuk.com could probably sort you out a quote for the package minus the Vegas bit, although depending on what is included (or not) at Vegas it might not be much cheaper and could even be dearer.
  • As factor in if she does diy it & for whatever reason her flights are delayed then the cruise company won't wait for her but if it's part of a deal then they usually will.

Has she looked at sites like cruise critic as they do tours like this.
  • Thanks for the helpful replies. There will be two people going. Aunt would rather skip Vegas and spend those days in San Francisco.
  • For my money, spending eight days on a cruise around the Hawaiian islands wouldn't be the best use of the time. I would choose 2 - or maybe 3 - of the islands that sounded most interesting, and focus on those.

Keep in mind that Waikiki is very very touristy. It's not a bad experience at all (I quite enjoyed watching US tourists on holiday), but I wouldn't want to make it the main stop on my trip to Hawaii. My favourite island was Hawaii itself (The Big Island) - for volcanoes, lava, coffee plantations, nice beaches, lack of crowds and just a generally nice laid-back vibe.

I do see the appeal of booking the package but definitely price things up separately. Good luck! I've been a couple of times and happy to answer any specific questions.

I found Waikiki to be really bleughhh, compared to the other parts of Oahu. For us, Waikikis best feature was the road (any road) leading away from it.

Decent cruise offer here, if the shipboard element attracts your aunt and her companion, and they don't mind LA.

There will be cruises from San Francisco if preferred.
