Is there such a thing as a free version of Photoshop or a good alternative?

    Have you tried GIMP?
    https://www.gimp.org/

There's a plethora of tutorial and "how to" videos on YouTube.

Photoshop 'express' is free for the ipad and on phones, lets you do most basic actions.

As others have said, depends what you are wanting to do really, paint, draw, photo edit etc as to what might work best for you.

You used to be able to get an early version of photoshop free. It had everything I needed a few years ago.
Plus I remember you could trial it for a month free a few years ago.

Photoshop Express is also available on PC now via the Windows store.

The following has probably the best 5 free options:

You can download earlier versions of Photoshop for 'free' (such as CS2), but this is only because they have disabled the activation checks. You are still meant to have a legitimate licence, but that is obviously up to anyones choice whether they follow that or not.

GIMP is powerful but I find it frustratingly difficult to use. I don't know if that's down to its design or because I have used Photoshop for so long and am used to that.

There is a free Photoshop alternative that runs in your browser. It even opens XCF, XD and Sketch files as well as PSD. I've never used it myself since I have a Creative Cloud subscription but this site is incredible to say it's made by one person and it does so much in a web browser.

If you want a cut-down version of Photoshop, why not look at Photoshop Elements, at about £70?
