Who Does/Does Not Accept Amex? 13th Jul 04 at 3:09 PM
    Official Insert:

Hi, we have a more recent list of which organisations accept Amex on our main site: Amex Acceptance.

    Back to Galstonian's original thread..

    ------------

The new and hopefully improved version of this thread. !Apologies to the red/green colour blind among us but these made most sense to differentiate between do/don't. !Any comments, corrections etc.. please let me know.

If someone posts that a retailer accepts and someone else that they do not I'm putting them in both lists until told otherwise (e.g. Gap)

American Express have a policy of not signing up online gambling sites so it is very likely that NO ONLINE CASINOS ACCEPT AMEX. !I've listed "gambling online" in not accepted rather than keep adding individual sites and casinos.

If you want to request a retailer is added you can ask Amex to contact them using this form

Martin recently contacted Amex and got this reply:

    Dear Martin,

The Card is widely accepted on the high street and in restaurants as well as all major petrol stations, major national supermarkets, train operators and
    lots more.

However, there were a couple of names on the list of NON accepting merchants, that actually do accept :

    Jessops
    Halfords

In addition, we sign up merchants every day, so a couple that will begin accepting Amex very soon include:

    JJB Sports and London Underground

There is one merchant listed that we are unfortunately prohibited from signing. That's Blue Square, it's a gambling site, and we have a global policy of not
    signing up these sites.

    Hope this helps,

I couldn't believe it when I handed over my AMEX card to pay for goods at Boots and they refused it. I moaned at them - "big company like this, not taking American Express!"

Never tried it in Woolies, they ought to be ashamed of themselves, both of them

Re: Who Does/Does Not Accept Amex?
If you're not desperate for the item and know you can get it for the same price elsewhere easy just say that's the only card you've got and ask them to cancel the purchase. Most stores keep a log of why the transaction was cancelled and if this is passed on with enough "Could only pay with AmEx" then they may change their policy.

Centre Parcs - Longleat (already mentioned above), not only can you pay for your holiday, but all the little retailers inside also accept Amex. Fancy paying for an icecream with Amex?

Just renewed my subscription for The Daily Telegraph with AMEX.
Prudential Insurance would not accept it.

    Lloyds Pharmacy DOES.

LA Fitness didn't used to - so they must've changed their policy.

BUPA also didn't used to - think they might do now.

American Express now have Boots on board and will start to accept the card as payment as soon as their computer systems have been updated. That is all departments: Optician, Dental, Pharmaceutical and Cosmetic.

Waitrose most certainly DOES accept Amex. It's the John Lewis department stores that don't.

Re: Who Does/Does Not Accept Amex?
    Yeah! Waitrose does!
  • thriftyone
Re: Who Does/Does Not Accept Amex?
Grest response on Waitrose accepting Amex, thank you.

Now I have an email from ASDA saying they do not accept Amex. Took them a few days to reply, John Lewis was a lot faster.

One error from Customer services I can believe.

Are ASDA Customer services wrong as well?

Has any one used Amex at ASDA recently?
