No reason to, and they couldn't anyway if the machine wouldn't fill the system because it failed the vacuum leakage.

Yes, that was my thinking. Hence why i was asking you as you seemed to be implying they should have done a dye test.

Its quite a binary thing for them - if they can regas it, they will.

They wont attempt to get involved in leak or fault finding as its time consuming and they are unlikely to have the part anyway.

Usually they dont charge, however i think where the O/P has fallen foul was that he paid in advance for a Groupon voucher so the refund had to come from Groupon.

I'm a bit wary of letting fast fit places work on car aircon. It's one of the most fragile, easily broken and most expensive to fix, systems on your car.

I wouldn't let Kwik Fit anywhere near it, not sure if ATS Euromaster is better.

They dont do anything other than plug in to a valve or two.

I used to quite like Kwikfit for it when i was motor trading.

I remember once they couldnt do it because there was a leak but pointed out the joint that was broken and didnt charge me.

I went and got the part (a few £s), had it fitted and took it back and got it redone. Would have cost me no doubt £££s to get a specialist to find the fault.

Wouldnt let them near a car for anything else though :)

That already sounds beyond the abilities of 90% of Kwik Fit's staff but I guess if you find the rare 1 in 10.

Does that include the courtesy, "Your shocks are knackered mate you need new ones throughout, and wheel alignment and your rear offside is below the legal limit," service?

LOL. And the obligatory "we cant legally let you leave here until all this essential remedial work is rectified"?

Fortunately they tend to have an aircon "bloke" who doesnt seem terribly bothered about the other bits on your car. Which is nice.

Havent needed to be bothered in ages, fortunately, as i no longer trade.

Isn't it more likely that the Halfrauds filled a leaking system because they haven't a clue what they are doing?

    Yes and time will tell.

did any of them carry out a dye test of the system? If not how do they know if it does or doesnt leak?

Dye should be added as part of the charging process. In moat machines nowadays that is done automatically.

The dye is added to the oil. Most of the time it doesn't come out with a slow leak, to find a slow leak you need a sniffer, which means an air-con specialist as fast-fit places don't have one.

ATS can pressure test the system with dry nitrogen and measure the pressure drop in a set time (should be zero), and the filling machine does a vacuum leakage test. Neither will find a leak that takes a week to empty the system.

    (I know from experience ;))

A sniffer is no use though if the system has been empty of gas for quite a while.

And a sniffer is standard equipment for Kwik fit sites.

Quite possibly just done a manual charge without checking the system for leaks
