It is very steep but when everybody joins in and overcharges it becomes the norm. The one that intrigued me was when British Gas started charging £3K to install boilers. Everyone started to accept it as the 'norm' even though it was at least twice what it should be.

I would love to have a spy cam on a 1 year old low mileage car going to a main dealer for servicing. I bet not a lot is done.

When I had a 1 year old low mileage car it went for service and the dealer sent me a video showing the various checks being carried out (brakes, lights, suspension, exhaust, etc.)

They may not "do" much, but they check a lot, and it all takes time.

I have just booked my car in for a service and it is a £190.
Does that sound right? Its just a SEAT not a Jag!

It’s about right. You can get the same service at a VW specialist for £129. It’s a glorified oil and filter change. The parts and oil would cost you £40 ish to buy yourself.
The questions are can you fit them yourself, is it still in warranty, and do you want/need a “service history” when you come to sell or trade it ?

Wait until it needs a major service/timing belt/brake fluid change and it really will be exspensive, unfortunately all part of the cost of running a car.
When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on

Its been booked in for next week. No idea how they break that down, it was just the price they gave me. I was expecting £100, maybe £150 max. Im in Manchester and at one of our local garages.

Is that local garage a SEAT main dealer?

I meant one of our local SEAT garages. There are 2 within 10-15 miles of where I live.

There's no need to use the dealer you purchased the car from. Any franchised dealer (or Seat-authorised service point) can do the service just the same.

Any non-Seat garage can do the service and you'll maintain the warranty, but you may have to prove that it was done to the official standard using official parts, and it may affect resale value, or you may have an issue on handing it back to the finance firm.
  • Sounds about right. My Fiesta costs about that for servicing at the main dealer I bought it from.

My policy is to take it to the dealer I bought it from for servicing unless they start charging me excessive amounts of money. As long as I have no reason to mis-trust the dealer, I don't try to make small savings by shopping around.

I have been servicing my Fiesta from new. The first service cost was £25 which includes Comma oil and Mann filters. That's including a pollen filter that a lot of garages don't bother changing.

Service schedule will tell you what's done. Or even your receipt. First service can be oil and filters change without anything else, but it doesn't need to be any more than that usually.

There is a massive culture in the garage service industry of not actually doing what they say they have done. I used to drive round with a report that showed that 75% of garages didn't service cars properly. That was in case my car broke down and they suggested I hadn't serviced it properly. I was going to say that if I had taken it to a garage it almost definitely wouldn't have been serviced properly. My car never broke down.
