Carcinoma

Our lovely almost 10 year old cat Gizmo has been diagnosed with cancer, its attached to trachea and surrounding areas, the vets think it started in the throat or tonsils.

Anyone have any advice based on their own cat experiences, we have a very tough decision to make, cat is in pain.

Awaiting call from Langford (specialists)

Sorry to hear that Mupette. Obviously the specialists will give you the best advice. Hopefully there will be a treatment available.

If your cat is in pain, you may have to consider that the kindest thing to do might be what we cat owners dread having to do. If it was me, I wouldn't want my cat to be in pain. Ultimately the best thing you can do is listen to your vet. It's a hard decison to make but you will know that you have done the right thing, no matter what that might be. To me it's all about quality of life for your cat. My Mum had a cat that had to have both eyes removed due to cancer but she was happy, had a good appetite and still managed to wander in and out of the garden on her own.

    Thinking of you both x.

Mupette - I'm so sorry. As jenny-wren says, you must do what is best for Gizmo. Your vet may be able to ease his pain, but if the tumour grows then he may struggle to breathe, which would be more distressing for both of you.

    Hugs to you both X

Well husband says he is in pain, but i am not seeing any signs of this, he says because Gizmo likes to sleep alone, well he always have,

I've seen him in pain when his lens got scratched in a cat fight, he was howling beside me and restless.

He is eating as normal, no upset belly etc, still loves a fuss on his terms.

Of course be assured if he was in pain and the operations they suggest will not help then i will ask that they start his journey to rainbow bridge.

    Update:

Full body scan, it hasn't spread, but there were lymph nodes that were raised and probably about to turn.

We decided not to go forward with an operation as it was too entwined and too aggressive, the surgeon said that it would not get rid of it, chemo and radiotherapy will only give him an extra few months.

We took him home, Gizmo may only have weeks or few months left, so we will let him tell us when it's time, no more vet visits, he stresses out too much, we will call for a home visit when it's time to help guide Gizmo to rainbow bridge :(

Make plans now on what you want to happen when the time comes. Better to do it now than when you are distressed.

    Such things as
vet to come to the house or take him to surgery. if you want the vet to come to the house clear that with him now.

Bury him in the garden or cremation ?
If cremation, arranged through the vet or take him yourself if there is a facility locally?

    Do you want ashes back?

Make the most of your time with him and take one day at a time.

Been asking around today about which local vets do @home, our own vet will but they can be busy as its more of a walk in centre, but all local vets do they just charge more, tbh that's absolutely fine with us, we just want him to be less stressed.

Yes hubby and we need to talk about after, we live in my parents old house and my own dogs are buried in the garden, husband knows this, but he may have his own views on what he wants. <3 thank you

Edit to say husband had already made up his mind that Gizmo will go in the back garden, with half a ham roll and a prawn cracker, these are the things he bought us as gifts when he was younger :)

So sorry to read of your situation. Have been in a very similar situation with our cat.

Our beloved boy Benny went to Rainbow Bridge on Monday just a week after being diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma in his mouth.

It's the hardest thing I've ever had to do but it was the best for him as he was struggling to eat. We are heartbroken at the loss of our wee man but it would have been worse for him had we waited any longer.

    Hugs to you all X

It's Gizmo's final few days, loosing appetite, loosing weight, breathing has started to change.

We made the decision that Friday Gizmo should go over the Rainbow bridge, unless he needs to go sooner. :(

Give Gizmo a big hug from me, and give yourself one too. You're doing the best for him and although it's a hard decision, it's what is best for him. He'll go over rainbow bridge knowing he was very much loved.
