    80km per week = 80,000 m per week = 11,428.6m per day.
    12,000 paces = 11,428.6m so 1 pace = 11,428.6 / 12,000 = 0.9524m = approx 95cm
    Hope that helps MrChumley

To add 20% , you multiply by 6/5
So if you have total, you multiply by 5/6 to get the original
    ie 100x6/5=120
    and 120x5/6=100
    But 120-20%= 96

I got 99 too! I quite enjoyed some holiday maths!

    I got wrong:
You buy a laptop that costs £899, including VAT at 20%. How much of the purchase price is VAT?

Why is it not £179.80??? I cannot understand why I got it wrong.

    Am I mis-reading the question?

The price of £899 includes VAT, so you have to work out what the price was *before* they added VAT. So you take 899, divide by 120 (because £899 represents 120% of the pre-VAT price, ie 100%+VAT at 20%) then times result by 100 to get pre-VAT price.
    Pre-VAT price = £749.17
    So VAT = £149.83
If you add both together you get £899

Scored 73 here, without a calculator.
For a retired person wth only a CSE grade 4 in maths, (remember them?) I'm actually pretty happy with that.
I got 73 too. Scraped through a Maths GCSE grade C in my late 30s. This result is as I expected, I was never terribly good at Maths.

20% of £719.20 does not equal £179.80. Using your calculations the total price would be £853.04.

Has the explanation to this question not been done to death now?

Was there something wrong with Greyfox's answer in the 7th post on the thread that people feel the need to continue to contribute the same answer over and over?

Did anyone else get the question about the minimum temperature in January? There was just a picture that said "January" against an icy background instead of (I assume) a graph. I chose don't know and was wrong. Not impressed!

Your answer is simply 20% of £899.00. But the question said that £899.00 includes VAT of 20% on the basic price. So £899.00 = 120% of the basic price. The basic price is therefore 899.00/120%, or £749.17. Add 20% for VAT (£149.83) and you get £899.00. So the VAT amount included is £149.83.
