Trees and answering questions while seeking insurance

Options
Some insurance companies ask you declare if there is a Tree over 10m within 5m of “your property”.

Where do you measure the 5m from? Is it from the furthest extent of the trees branches or is it from the tree trunk?

Also at what point on “your property” do you measure the 5m from?

What if your House outer wall was 7m from the tree but you had a separate garage building that was only 3m from the tree. Would this mean your house was covered but your garage wasn’t?

Ask the insurer - if the answers are the ones you like, then ask them to confirm them back to you in writing to keep on file should issues arise in future

(Nearest point on house to trees root seems logical for measuring.

The garage looks too close to the tree - see what insurer says)

"Of your property" must mean the house. The furthest point of our property is about 300 yards from the house, and no tree has roots that extensive.

Measuring to the trunk would be reasonable. If they want you to be more specific they should say so.

It usually means any tree that is within 5m from any point of the property but most insurers give a height also.

For example, within 5m from the property AND taller than 3m in height.

Garages aren!!!8217;t always covered under your policy unless you include them in your BSI, they are of standard construction and the insurer is aware they exist.
