Think we'll definitely do the northern lights cruise type thing. Then I'm not sure where else we'd go. We've been fortunate to see a lot of places already so maybe some revisits?

Glad switching bonus through at last. For some reason I'm hesitant about changing accounts frequently, I'm missing out on free money!

We need to renew our adult passports and buy 2 for the children. I keep putting it off each month!

Great news on switching bonus :j:j I am waiting to hear with bated breath whether we have been accepted to open the Coop account - then we both have a donor account waiting to switch, so fingers crossed.

We are trying to balance paying the mortgage off and doing some travelling now ( rather than waiting until we are MF). Having seen our parents contract fairly critical illnesses in their late 50s, early 60s I don't want to wait and then find we are not fit enough to visit the places we want to see. We missed out on travelling when we were young - we were married with mortgage at age 19, so we are doing our back packing now ( the kids call it flash packing because we stay in nice hotels not hostels ! )

BusyMee - that is so true grasping opportunities now. Did one big trip with DS after similar happened with my seemingly very fit and healthy father. East and West coasts of USA, plus Hawaii. Fantastic 3 weeks at bargain bucket prices. :)

DS at an age where I can't leave him, yet he doesn't want to come with me, plus my mum being terminally ill and my health not fantastic..hoping after the mortgage is gone (or maybe sooner is a possibility) things will be right for a spot of travelling.

    Love the 'flash packing' :D

Well after the euphoria of the £150 OP its back to a bump with managing an anemic looking current account balance for 12 more days! Typically Mrs SJ bought some holiday clothes for the kids in a good sale but has the wrong card with her so that's come out of the current account instead of on CC for next month (which is fine and totally budgeted for). Then i inadvertently used the wrong card to book golf! We never get this wrong and typically we've done it when account is dry and £96 has come out for passports!

So, tonight i'll have to make some temporary transfers out of savings pots, grrr!

    Hiya All
Sorry not to have been around recently. Life has been a bit manic recently as I am trying move house and have been let down by purchasers and ruddy solicitors. anyway re the thirds thing.

It has always been a tradition in our family that whenever you get some buckshee (unexpected or free monies) you save a third for long term savings such as furniture or mortgages (reduction or saving for); one third for intermediary items such as holidays or pressys for special occasions (e.g. coming up is son's 30th birthday so it involves hiring accommodation for folks - meal out etc) and one third for fun - an unplanned day out/ meal out/daft purchase such as a rock star's poster (when the kids were young)/ unplanned trip to theatre or London. People always wondered how I managed to do things like hire houses for a week etc because I was a divorced single parent with £68 per month for both boys as maintenance! Its because I allocated bonuses, gifts etc in this way. I found your version of the 'thirds ' idea very interesting and inspiring!
