You won't be surprised to know that I've already mapped out the last 7 months of the Octopus Agile tariff pricing against the last 7 months of my energy usage/import broken down into 30 min chunks to compare like for like.

Hi Zarch - couple of questions about Agile if I may....

    1. How much do the rates vary for the same period day by day? That is, can you safely bet that you'll always get much the same rate (give or take a bit) at much the same time, or does it vary significantly from one day to the next (with the exception of the occasional blip)?

    2. What's the typical spread of rates - i.e. not between the highest you've ever seen and the lowest you've ever seen, but the spread between the average high for a day and the average low for a day?

The significance of these questions for me is that although I'm on Economy 7, I don't have a separate time switched circuit and can buy my cheap electricity whenever it's best.

    Thanks, Mike

I reckon the future off peak overnight demand is going to be dictated by EVs.

Hi Nick - I'm with you on this, but can't make my mind up on how quickly this change will happen.....

Firstly, only being able to buy an EV from 2030, 2040 or whenever doesn't mean that there will only be EV's on the road as it will be another decade or so before exiting vehicles are scrapped.

Secondly, it does depend on consumer behaviour. For most of us on this forum, choosing the best energy supplier is a no-brainer, but there are still an awful lot of people who have never switched. This isn't just elderly or vulnerable non-car drivers, I know lots of people who haven't swicthed. If this group haven't even looked at different energy providers what will it take to persuade them to choose a tarriff that saves money on overnight EV charging?

My gut feeling is that although EV ownership will grow rapidly, within the timescale of my existing FIT contract and battery-life (10 to 15 years) the change won't be enough for EVs to have taken over the roads.....

    Hi Mike,

Give me a bit of time as i'm working a bit of a project to display all the agile data i've collated (15 months data for each region).

In the meantime...... Octopus release tomorrows prices at around 5pm the day before. So before you go to bed you'll know what tomorrow is going to cost.

Yes, the data follows a very similar pattern give or take a penny here and there.

For an example, here's a few days worth from Yorkshire region for each half hour (ending in the time listed).

I think the change will happen when there are more vehicle options between the Tesla/iPace at one end and the i3/Leaf at the other. That middle ground is poorly populated at the moment & it’s an area where high mileage drivers spend their money/car allowance. These are the people who are going to make the real difference to overnight demand because they will be charging every night. It’ll probably be another 5 years before there are a significant number of offerings with the desired performance & range in that price bracket.

I drive 33000 miles a year and an EV would be ideal for me. The only problem is that I can’t justify an iPace and that’s the only vehicle that tempts me at the moment.

That's the main premise of the tariff.

    https://octopus.energy/agile/

High prices (when UK wide demand is highest) and lower prices at all other times.

So if you can shift your usage away from around 4pm - 7pm you should be better off. So solar and ultimately batteries should help with this for much of the year.
