the open university offers many courses, more and more of which have an online component and some are purely online.

they range from courses lasting a few weeks to PhDs!

funding is potentially available, based on personal circumstances. this could cover your fees partially or even entirely - and you might even get money towards study essentials like a computer.

studying with the open uni completely changed my life and i got my degree with them for almost no financial lay-out at all.

they're really open to people of all backgrounds and with no study history.

    https://www.open.ac.uk

(ps: i promise i don't work for them!)
Boyfriend & I have saved £12K in two years, thanks to careful budgeting and keeping a record of what we spend. I've never paid myself this amount of money before - it feels great!

Deutsche Welle give free German courses - Beginner, Intermediate and Business: http://www.dw-world.de/ It is possible to download the PDF files if you want.

For those who are already quite advanced, you can get free internet TV at http://www.ard.de. If you go to Tagesschau and choose the last transmission option (Letze Sendung) you will get a written summary of the topics to help you. Babelfish translater (also free) can then be used to decipher anything you don't understand. However, you have to be careful with Babelfish because it will not always translate accurately.

Deutsche Welle also transmit internet TV - some programmes in German and some in English.

A selection of free internet TV in all languages can be found at http://www.beelinetv.com

More radio and TV stations are supplied at http://www.multilingualbooks.com
Click on radio stations on the front page and this will lead you to the option for TV stations.

Vision2learn not available in Scotlan, Wales or Northern Ireland yet.

Not being funny, but if it's all done online, why does it matter if the student is in Scotland, Wales or NI? I'm in Scotland, I wonder if i could register my Mum's address as my own as she lives in England!??

Vision2Learn is funded by the local skills councils so it requires patnerships with colleges that can fund students in your particular area, they are free to you, however they make money from you signing up.

Last time I heard they did not have any associations in scotland and wales and did not cover the whole of the UK therefore its pretty hit and miss that you could get a course, also only some courses are available in some parts of the country which is a bit odd.

With Vision2Learn you can get kicked off too, I got kicked from their sports course as I hadnt done an assignment in time, this was due to the funders requiring course completion in a certain time frame, but this should not put you off if you are serious in completing a course in a reasonable time frame (I was too busy unfortunately and I was told I could re-apply)

There is a free windows XP course at http://www.courses-online.co.uk its got adverts in but its quite good for beginners, you dont have to register you can just click and learn, but registration gives you an exam and course tracking etc.

Also http://www.freeskills.com has a lot of free tutorials and if you sign up for their free trial to their online courses section you get the first 20 odd pages from the courses. They charge £99 for full signup to their courses (all tutorials are free) but they seem to give out discount vouchers every month for about 20% off, just sit on their mailing list if you want to buy :)

Not quite a course but this site has some great learning resources if your a budding photographer:
    http://www.digital-photography-school.com/blog/
see the Tips bit on the top right. Then, once you've taken your photos theres always Good Tutorials ( http://www.good-tutorials.com/ ) which has over 12000 photoshop tutorials or the official GIMP (http://www.gimp.org/) site which has loads of links to tutorials and guides. In case you haven't heard of it before, GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Tool) is a free, open source program that comes very close to Photoshop in terms of functionality. If you are thinking about learning photography definately try out the GIMP before forking out a few hundred quid for photoshop.
