No tenancy agreement - Can I move out whenever I want?

Hey, I'm living in a flat rented from an agency. They pay for us all bills + no deposits + council tax and each months give to them in cash the rent, nothing has been signed.( They clearly want to avoid paying tax)
I called them a week ago that we would like to move out in the next week (All rents have been paid) and they told us that there is a month notice period so we will have to pay for the rest of the weeks that are in the notice period.

So you have to give a months notice?

I don’t understand the problem here
  • Yes, do I need to give a month notice? I'd like to move out earlier

Well yes, you do if that!!!8217;s what you agreed to.

Unless you intend to perjur yourself should they decide to chase you for rent for the notice period
  • I called them a week ago that I want to move out today. They said I have to stay 1 month extra and pay for that month because I want to move out. But we don't have any agreement and nothing has been signed between me and them. So can I just move out? They can't prove anything in the verbal agreement, it's word against a word.

Well no one can stop you moving out.

But they could take you to court for the money

Do you only rent a room in a shared property ?
I no longer work in Council Tax Recovery but instead work as a specialist Council Tax paralegal assisting landlords and Council Tax payers with council tax disputes and valuation tribunals. My views are my own reading of the law and you should always check with the local authority in question.
  • I rent a flat.
I doubt they would sue me, not with their shady business.
  • I can just say I didn't pay anything. There is no proof that I paid them. We just exchange cash hand to hand, that's it.

Why not; shady or not they could win in court
  • I paid to them everything, I just don't want to stay extra month.
