My 5 year plan

Happy new year!

I made a thread at the end of last year in the DFW section (http://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/showthread.php?t=5756197) because of a few silly financial decisions I made in the past year and wanted to set them straight. As part of that I made a spending diary for week and realised how much more I was spending than what I though I was.

So I promised 2018 was going to be different and that I'd make a thread here to set my goals and note down any achievements!

My 5 year plan looks like this:

Timeline:

Year 1 (2018):
Plan completed - 01/10/18 (see page 29)

Year 2:
January - Cancel Mrs' mobile - Cancelled 06/12/2018
March - Pay road tax IN FULL
May - Apply for tax rebate
July - Pay home insurance IN FULL
13th August - Renegotiate Virg. Media
September - Pay car insurance IN FULL
September - Pay TV licence
Overpay £483/month to mortgage + £17/month extra to remaining debts
Continue to build up the safety fund

Year 3:
Pay off credit card (currently on 0% deal)
Overpay mortgage

Years 4 & 5:
Overpay mortgage.

I have 6 years and 9 months remaining at the moment but I have been making overpayments and I'm due to re-mortgage in October at the end of a 5 year fix.
At the end of year 5 have enough money saved to pay any outstanding balance on the mortgage.

Obviously as each debt is paid off I'll have extra to pay to the next debt, this is where I'll struggle. It'll take a lot of commitment and focus not to go bananas with any spare cash but I'm 43 and want to be debt free by 50. I can do this in 5 years. Debt free by 48 would be amazing!

Wish me luck!

Robert

NOTE: Due to a malicious attack some diaries disappeared and this was one of them. I started a new one, but the nice people at MSE towers managed to recover my original one and they're now merged, from page 6 onwards.

I am another 5 year planner. Whenever I panic I look back at the plan and think 'it is okay, you are on-plan.' It helps inform what I do as i ask 'is this in the plan?' and if it isn't I swerve.

Good luck. I will be following

  • Hi, good luck with your 5 year plan-something I think I'll look into doing too.
All the best and look forward to watching your journey :-)
  • Just ensure you can pay off the 0% CC deal in year 3 and you don't incur the charges post ending the deal.

    It might be worth either:-

1.0 Doing cat flow for the 5 years with DD's set up to pay off the major loans/CC

2.0 paying off CC 0% in year 2 instead of loan (depends on early repayment charges on loan, loan interest rate and thew cash flow mentioned above.

Again Mortgage , check any early repayment charges and maximum allowance to overpay each year. This could be added to cash flow discussed in 1.0
Debt is a symptom, solve the problem.

    Hi, thanks for the comments.

Yes, I've set the monthly payment on the CC so that the balance is clear at the end of the 0% term so all good there.

Car finance is 6.9% so would rather pay it off asap and let the CC run it's course.

Current mortgage is with Santander who allow 10% overpayment, however the mortgage I fancy switching to in September (assuming its still available) allows 20% overpayment with no penalty. But I can't see overpayments being a possibility in years 1 or 2 so whatever mortgage I go for next really needs to be the lowest possible cost over 2 or 3 years (by cost I mean set up fee & interest rate). I would like to shorten my term again as the lower interest rates currently available would mean keeping my payment the same over a shorter term (currently 3.24% - £800/month)

    Cheers
