My moggies are 9 and 10. And this year my insurer Argos has increased the premium by over 40% despite their continuing good health.

I've looked at Bought by Many and it is a very attractive policy and much cheaper. I'm not interested going cheap on my furbabies lives so am much more interested in how well they work when you need them.

Feefo has got amazing reviews bought I'm sceptical about online review services.

So. Is Bought by Many as good as they seem?

The one item which makes me nervous is the excess which is 69 (reasonable) AND 20% of the treatment. Could be costly?

My dog is insured with Bought by Many and has been since we got him as a puppy - he is two and a half now.

Last year he had a phase of being a bit lame and had to have some X-rays done, but thankfully nothing bad was found. Anyway Bought by Many paid out in full no trouble.

I like their online claims system because it is so much easier than having to fill in a paper form and then take it to the vet etc. I just filled in the details online, they contacted the vet direct and then paid them direct (minus the excess of course). The whole process only took a few weeks.

All I can say is that my experience of claiming from them was brilliant, no problem at all.
Stopped smoking 27/12/2007, but could start again at any time

When Pet Plan introduced the 20% + excess due to my cats age, I calculated 20% of the maximum policy cover (£7k) as being £1400. I decided in a pinch I could afford that for 1-2 years.

In the event my late cat needed a specialist Vet. It is rare but I never thought it would happen to us! That claim alone was £3000 (tests, an overnight stay) so my liability was £600 + the £115 excess. Bad timing meant the policy renewed after my Local Vet and before the specialist, so two excesses were payable.

Yes it got costly but I had decided previously I could afford it.
  • We have recently received our renewal for our cat who is now 10. He's always been insured with Tesco and has had a fairly big jump in premium this year so I've been exploring other options.

I have always been wary of switching as he had an accident when he was fairly young where I think (from memory) one of his back legs got broken at the hip joint (I have the receipt for the operation at home). I am trying to work out how this would be treated in terms of a pre-existing condition. Obviously he had the operation and has been fine for a number of years, but if he started to develop say arthritis in that hip, would that fall outside the policy due to the accident?

I would try the comparison websites notifying them of everything that you have mentioned and then get the quotes - then I would do exactly the same with a pretend cat, same info apart from the accident, then the results will tell you.

YES, anything that can be related to a previous condition/injury would be excluded so arthritis would come under that exclusion.

You could compare the estimated cost of any ongoing medicine for arthritis and the cost of the new premiums.
Although another company would exclude it, it may still be cost effective to change and pay for any treatment needed for any arthritis that may or may not arise. You would still be covered for anything that arose.

Pet insurance doesn't work like that. The premium stays the same but any claim for anything related to a previous condition is excluded.
  • I've just had my renewal proposal from legal and general. How on earth can they justify trying to increase my premium by so much!! My issue is that if I switch I'll forfeit my lifetime condition cover. Any ideas welcome, thankyou

Their justification will be what they estimate they will have to pay out for that lifetime condition.

Your dog's age will also affect the premium.

If your excess plus your annual premiums add up to more than the amount you claim you can consider self insuring by putting that money away on a separate account to be used for vet bills.

Changing policy would exclude anything in the future that can be related to the pre existing condition but ti will cover you for any new condition.

Insurance companies are not a charity or an NHS for pets. They are a business operating to make a profit for their shareholders.
  • You may want to check out Money Saving Pet Centre. (Just Google it)

Found this site and you can customise your quote to whatever you can afford. Sadly as much as we love our pets we cannot all afford the best insurance policy for them, but it is always better to have something rather than nothing.

Our dog was unwell last week with a virus and a quick trip to the vet soon turned into £1300. Thank goodness we had him covered as we would not have been able to find that money so quickly.

    Hope this helps.
