Is your broadband service affected by the weather??

We have BT Broadband and have both noticed that every time it rains, the service is not as good as usual! BT completely deny this could be the case, but it's a regular occurrence.

Anyone-else have this issue?

maybe a manhole needs pumping out.

or if you are connected to a telegraph pole, maybe that lets water into its junction box

Damp/moisture can affect the conductivity of poor joints.

This won't happen on a properly maintained connection.
  • I used to have Sky broadband previously and when it used to rain the net speed would drop considerably, now i have Virgin broadband at the same address and regardless of the weather the internet speed is always stable.

Now where have I come across this before? We suffered this problem for eleven years with talk talk and latterly EE. Read this, then send it to BT. If I remember there may be a contact mentioned in my thread. Good luck, you probably have an old corroded BT phone line. Go for them.

It's not unusual for line defects to be more noticeable in poor weather, the problem is , quite often, by the time the issue is reported, and Openreach get round to testing/checking, the weather is better and the problem reduces and becomes undetectable,.
Unfortunately the fault reporting system in place, is if the line passes a series of electrical checks, because the weather has improved, then the line is said to be OK, but when it rains you go around the reporting system again .
You probably want to approach the problem as a telephony one rather than a broadband problem, when it rains and you think your 'service' is being affected, pick up the phone and dial 17070' take the quiet line test and listen, if the line is noisy , report it to the phone line provider as a noisy line....if the weather improves , and 17070 isn't noisy anymore , it just makes locating the problem harder for OR, you may need to re report it if they cancel the initial report as right when tested
  • Yes broadband and tv go haywire when it rains heavily. If it's a heavy downpour it goes off completely until it finishes, I'm with BT

I had Talktalk for a few years, they used to break down with any "extreme"weather (bare in mind I live in London, not Wales, we don't really experience extreme weather to the same degree as other towns do). If it snowed, no connection for a few days, if it is very warm or hot, no connection for a few days, if it rains a lot, if it's very cold...

I contacted them a number of times, it would affect my landline and broadband and I get no signal when I am at home so would have to go to the Carphone Warehouse stores at the time to contact them and start off a check and then investigation. I had Openreach visit that many times I lost count!
It wasn't really corrected and I left to use O2 who were very helpful and sorted the issue in a week by simply switching channels. I didn't experience the issues again until I was sold to Sky (O2 were taken over) but it only took them a few weeks to sort the issue back again.
I get the same every time I switch to a different ISP, I now know to just ask them to "change the channel I am on" and it seems to work. I can't understand why it took Talktalk so long and I really can't understand why I put up with it for so long!

It's not BT that maintain the external network it's Openreach, and unless Virgin Media is available , then even if you don't use BT, the company you do use would be using the same 'wires' that are affected by the weather , so you would have the same problem regardless of provider....
you may have better luck with another provider getting OR to fix the problem , but then again, other providers may be the same or even worse than BT at getting OR involved
As far as TV going off in heavy rain, my Sky TV service does this , but the Internet and phone (BT) are fine, if phone and broadband go off when it rains , you should report it, because it shouldn't do that
