Moved into first home - utterly confused by electric

Hello all,

Hope this is the right part of the forum for this!

Completed on my first home last week, but only just starting to get moved in this week
I'm totally confused about my electricity situation. Eon is the electricity supplier, and I believe a smart meter is fitted. The little portable screen was totally dead, and now that I have charged it it is showing approx 90p of credit, so I'm assuming its a prepay meter, and its about to run out.

So my immediate question is, how do I stop my electricity going off?
There's no obvious slot to put a card/dongle so assume it's an online thing.

The Eon website is useless, and I can't seem to create an account with them online. I've tried ringing and the online assistant and have not been able to get through with either.

I've tried to do a moving house form thing but it only seems to apply to existing customers??

Any help/guidance greatly appreciated, otherwise I'll have to go out and buy some candles...

  • If it's an EON Smart Prepay meter their booklet says

How to activate your emergency credit
If your balance drops to £2 or less and you can’t top up your
meter straightaway, you can activate £15 emergency credit per
fuel (£20 if you only have electricity).
If your meter display shows ‘EC OFFERED’ press button A.
If it doesn’t, press ‘7’ on the keypad then button A.
After you’ve activated emergency credit, we’ll still collect your
daily standing charge and any repayment plan debts due.
Once the emergency credit is used up, your supply will
    disconnect unless you top up.
    Our friendly hours
Even if you’re out of credit, your meter won’t disconnect on
Sundays, UK Bank Holidays, or 4pm-11am, Monday to Saturday.

Then phone them first thing tomorrow as a new customer and get the meter reset for you with a new account.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
  • Thanks for the quick reply, on closer investigation, the balance on the smart screen has now ticked up to about £1, so doesn't appear to prepay after all!
I'm assuming the meter reset to zero after previous occupants notified of moving out.
Panic over for now I think and will contact them in the morning.
