Hugs are what matter, absolutely. And a good idea to make sure about your own family history - there's lots and lots of cancer in my family, but there's also one main type that gets a *lot* of cases - and I'm lucky that I don't have much of the main risk factor, sunbathing.

Sorry your own boys are shocked as well, that must be really hard for you - but they *do* have you to lean on.

    Take care.

Thanks everyone. We are all still a bit shocked. Ds1 particularly affected.
Everything happens for a reason but it’s so hard not to be angry and upset.

I am almost finished my research into cancer, I’m ashamed That i hardly knew any of the signs. I have learnt to “check my chaps” (Do not want to be deleted again!) and there is a good video of it from a morning breakfast show. I’ve done it and will do it every month. If in the shower I can put on a hair mask and face mask whilst I’m checking. Do it everyone!!

It looks as if my mum is high risk and I’m moderate risk of that kind of cancer. I will see the doctors at age 39 to get a scan when I am 40.

I need to look again at our life insurance dates.

There is another test that ladies in England get that I don’t get in scotland. I am going to do this privately at a cost of £50.

Finally I have roped OH into checking my moles and I’ll check his. (Going to keep a phone app folder for this, although you can get specialist apps but they cost money and I don’t think it’s worth it). Going to make stickers with sizes on like they had at the hospital.

  • I am so sorry to hear about your friend, cancer is a truly evil disease that tears families apart, I think it is worse when people are still young and have so much of their life ahead of them.

EG, If you have family history please push for early scans, I Have family history but wasn't offered anything (mother, grandmother, G-grandmother) and here I am in my late 30s having had breast cancer and gone through surgery. I will now get yearly scans and they will keep an eye on me but only because of what I have been through, i'm waiting on results of genetic testing to see if I carry one of the faulty genes. The lump I had was a cyst and nothing to do with the cancer, if I hadn't got a tiny cyst and gone to the doctor, they wouldn't have picked up the cancer because it was deep in the tissue, well not until it was to late and I was told this by the consultant, very scary :(.

Wow penny wise thank you so much for sharing your experience! And so glad for you that it was found.
My grandmother and her two sisters had it, but thankfully not my mum and no other close relatives. My mum is good at going for scans, they will stop for her now so I’m going to keep reminding her to self check and go to the doctors to ask for scans.

Thanks again penny wise. Really inspiring story.

So I’ve not just totally been off on a tangent with health. I’ve also been doing a few mse things:

    - two more ms this week so £14 in and a nice present for niece for free.
    - decided how to cut back on healthy food by doing swaps that are still healthy but much cheaper.
    - worked on ohs business

Friends are not visiting this weekend (one very ill) so we will have a cheap weekend. Tomorrow I plan to finish off my basic to do list and get organised for next weeek.

It sounds like it's really galvanised you, earthgirl - which I can absolutely understand.

Can I ask what apps you'd recommend about cancer checks? I'm so new to the apps game, I don't trust my own knowledge yet.

I don’t recommend any for cancer checks, there was one I looked into sk1nv1sion (but with i) but it was a subscription service and only 80 percent accurate so I’d have to go to docs anyway. I’d also worry about losing my photos with an app.

I have decided to just photograph my own moles and keep in a notebook in my ever note app. I use this for everything and trust eve note.

I’ve also put a check my chaps reminder every month on my google calendar. I’ll put the smear in as well.

In other news I’ll be a fake tan user (better late than never :( ) and sunblock user. And my daily moisturiser will be used up in winter and replaced by one with an spf in. Maybe overkill for Scotland though!!!
