Nationwide forex fee 2% to 2.75%

From October 8th Nationwide are making changes to their current accounts:

Shame but as I have a flex plus account I am not affected. My advice would be to get a Starling account and use this when abroad. Instant transfer from flex account using Apple Pay. No fees for overseas purchases or ATM withdrawals.

The Flex Plus £13 (just under£7 net with £2.5k @ 3%) per month for joint world wide travel, European breakdown cover plus smart phone cover as a joint account gives access to fee free withdrawals worldwide, combined with Select Credit Card with no fees on worldwide purchases is a great combination for couples

Added to the above I have Starling, Halifax Clarity and MBNA everyday Amex (soon to be everyday visa) all offering no fees or loading it will be a cold day in hell before I pay any fees for using plastic abroad!

It depends on how much you withdraw in cash abroad - for restaurant bills if you're a Nationwide customer the Select card is still "free" ie no extra charge on top of the Visa rate for purchases. The Visa rate has about a 0.5% spread on the € / £ pair.
So four withdrawals of £500 equivalent would cost you 4 x £13,75 = £55 + 4 x £1 per withdrawal = £59 which is not enough for me to open a new bank account or card.
As an example, withdrawing €500 today would cost you £461.28, or at Debenhams with the MSE voucher £454.09, so you could just take cash.
It is a pity as Nationwide used to be good for spending abroad - they claim still
