in Cutting tax
Hi
I have just purchased some US Shares and have been told I need to complete a W-8BEN form to reduce the tax on profit from 30 to 15%. Is completing this form the right thing to do?
On the form it asks for a TIN, I've tried to get guidance on the internet but its not very clear. As UK resident i do not have a TIN but I believe I can enter my NI number. Does anyone know if I can enter my NI number. If not do I need to apply for a TIN?
Thanks
Adam

Yes you can....you should be aware that you may now be required to complete a UK Tax Return if you are going to be receiving foreign dividends.0

Marketable Securities
A Form W-8BEN, Certificate of Foreign Status of Beneficial Owner for United States Tax Withholding, provided to claim treaty benefits does not need a U.S. TIN if the foreign beneficial owner is claiming the benefits on income from marketable securities.
U.S. Taxpayer Identification Number Requirement

A TIN is a number issued by the IRS, A NINO or a UTR is not a TIN.0
