Hi,
You should be ok, but £4000 is a fairly small amount of money that could be tackled without the need for insolvency.
Obviously I do not know your full circumstances, but stepchange should be able to advise you on the right course of action.I’m a Forum Ambassador and I support the Forum Team on the Debt free wannabe, Credit file and ratings, and Bankruptcy and living with it boards. I've done them for £4000, though not for people exactly in your situation.
If the person is on basic benefits, with no surplus and no prospects of improvement, then 4k can be a daunting amount, and a DRO works well.
Bear in mind that if you are linked financially then you will affect his credit history.0
