We have a smart prepaid meter (yes I know it's an expensive way to pay). Anyway we have never been in arrears so how come in a statement we just received saying we owe £78. We only use what we pay for so how can we owe anything.
Can anyone explain this please.

Maybe the start reading is wrong?
Maybe the current reading is wrong?
Maybe the meter is set to a different tariff than what you are actually on?
Maybe the supplier has accidentally placed you on the wrong tariff?
Maybe you have not topped up for quite a while, and this is an accumulation of daily standing charges?
Maybe your statement does not take account of all your top-ups?
    Maybe ...
    Maybe ...
    Maybe ...

Perhaps if you were to share with us your statement you have received from the supplier, we might be able to give you a more informed explanation.

You can owe money with a prepayment meter when you do not credit the meter enough to cover standing charges and any weekly debts which are loaded onto the meter.
Debts can be loaded onto the meter from £3.50 to £16 a week . Standing charges are around £2 a week but if you have long periods without crediting the meter it can build up to a debt. .
