Ideas for things to put in Advent calendar

To be honest, I only really open the calendar doors when my grandchildren visit. They are aged from 3 to 10, one girl and four boys. I have a couple of nice calendars so will choose one but want to try to avoid putting the usual chocolate coins, sweets etc. in but don't want to spend too much either! Any ideas appreciated, thanks.

Free perfumes samples (if the girl is the eldest)
    Pack crayons
    Little colouring notebook

I found most advents too small to put things in, so used to do clues to a hidden gift Shen mine were little.

Thank you, they love following clues so will definitely do that. Also, we have an Elf on the shelf who holds a little Christmas drawstring bag (I bought them on Amazon to give money gifts in last year and they are cute), so I could include him in the fun.
