  • Because it’s for government or MOD work.

They want to know you’re not money laundering and such.

You’re lucky it’s only SC as full DV clearance asks much much more

The rationale behind the security vetting process, including SC clearance, is explained here:

    https://www.gov.uk/guidance/security-vetting-and-clearance

Knowingly providing false information as part of the vetting process would not be advisable.

Be thankful - in the Good Olde Days they wanted to know if either of your parents had ever been a member of the Communist Party, among other things!
  • I do get the impression that they often know the information anyway in advance, but are effectively checking your honesty in declaring it (or not)

Maybe not so much on the SC side, but I've always thought that for DV.

My understanding was that they had previously done a credit check on SC but not much else. Agree that DV is much more in depth.

And if the person applying has money issues and is a target for being bribed etc.

Just be honest with your application.

That's one of the key things they look out for.

Apart from that you will be fine.

A commenter here supplied a link as to why they request it.

    All the best!

I was on a dump when had to renew my own clearance. I was hones. Told how much I owed and what I was doing about it. Was worried but it went through without any issue. It’s your honesty if your not honest and have money issues you’d be seen as a risk. Just tell the truth it should be fine.
