Can't see, where does the line enter your house?

I think it's this white box? the phone line hits the fascia runs down the house and into the white box. Then I THINK the wire runs through the ceiling and into the socket in the pictures (which is the understairs). Presumably that should be/is a master socket but I'm not sure.

Definitely looks like a DIY job to me.

It's worth noting the the cable going into your house is a different colour and type to the CAT5 cable you think is your main socket. I would take a look inside that outdoor cable housing box and just confirm that that is the join point.

Personally what I would do is hire a telecoms engineer, perhaps a former BT engineer, to remove that external junction box and put the BT cable into your house somewhere else and to fit a proper BT master socket.

Ok thanks for all your help stator. Really helpful. I may take a peek just to see whether there is a black to white wire switch and that may clarify whether the understairs is the (intended) master socket.

If no clarity I'll look at a current/former BT engineer to sort it out.

    Cheers,
    Martin
  • I wouldn't even call it a diy job as I'm a diyer and would do it better.

Yes, that is probably where your master socket should be.
A kind word lasts a minute, a skelped erse is sair for a day.
