  • If you ask He Who Knows he'll tell you the real problem is getting my home made soups to actually move in the first place! When I'd not known him for long I made us some soup one weekend and there was quite a lot left in the pan so he added some stock the next day and had it for lunch, put the rest in a bowl in the fridge and it set solid, so he added in some milk the next day had some for lunch and put the rest in the fridge and the next day he added some wine and the next some cider. It lasted a whole week and on the following Saturday there was still a tiny bit left.....set solid in a bowl in the fridge.....He reckoned I'd reinvented wallpaper paste!

Ah, MrsLW, perpetual soup! Reminds me of a recipe I saw in a book by Erin Pizzey, The !!!!!!'s Cook Book (sadly now out of print). It was a recipe for a beef stew that lasts 4 days. Day 1 you cook it and eat some. Day 2 you add wine and extra veg to the leftovers and eat some. Day 3 you curry what's left and eat some. Day 4, any remaining stew gets put on the garden to kill the weeds.

:) My tosspots is running an offer on B@tchelors Cup-a-Soup which they normally price at £1.20 per carton of 4 eg 30p per soup sachet. The current deal is 5 boxes for £3 meaning 15p per soup sachet. Of course, this is a product which goes on special every few weeks at 2 boxes for £2 which is 25p per sachet anyway.

:D I have stocked up for my pal who uses these. I've tried most varieties myself and found them tasty. HTH.

I've ben stocking up on food items a few bits a week for months so probably ok for a while as two freezers and cupboards full. I hadn't considered non food items like diesel, petrol and other fuels being an issue until a neighbour told me they might be. I think I need a big ball of cotton wool so I can wrap myself and my anxiety up in it.:rotfl:

Are fuel shortages likely? I can't see us walking 120 miles to work every day....
Trying to earn £2015 in 2015. Slightly early start ;). £175.88 today.
  • I have an 42 mile return trip to work... could get really fit on my bike!!

One thing I have learnt from the prepping is that long life products such as long life milk and frozen pepper/mushrooms etc are cheaper. Both purchase price and in reduced waste.

I can see no reason why they would be, the only European oil wells are ours, and Norway's
We refine our own oil, brought in by tankers from the likes of Saudi, Kuwait, Nigeria to name a few.

Yes, I agree. We refine much of our fuel requirement within the UK from crude oil from sources outside the EU.

The only likely scenario for there to be shortages of fuel is if everyone rushes out panic buying. :(

In terms of trade with the EU, the UK actually supplies the Republic of Ireland with about 75% of their refined oil requirements (petrol, diesel, heating oil and aviation fuel). Thus if there was some kind of issue with UK/EU trade then any loss of imports into the UK would hit our exports to RoI in turn.

When i read the post about a garage full up toilet paper i thought maybe 20% of the trees or pulp came from EU not just Sweden, But to read they import a finished product is ridiculous, hardly an efficient use of space or fuel on a HGV.

So yes i think we should all have a 6 months worth of paper products, or as mush as you can afford.

We could divert wood from the drax power plant to wipe are bums!

"According to former Labour MP and Minister for Europe Denis MacShane, the UK is the biggest importer of loo paper in the whole of Europe and it only stocks one day’s worth of supply. This means that a delay of a day or more could see shops facing shortages."

"As the United Kingdom is heavily dependent on imports of raw materials for its tissue industry, the country has been exposed to threatening market fluctuations in 2017. Steady rise of pulp and parent reels prices combined with a highly fluctuating exchange rate have had a deep impact on manufacturers which saw their profit margins evaporate in just over a few months.

Accrol Plc, a manufacturer specialised in private label and contracted by leading retailers such as Lidl, Tesco and Morrison, faced unprecedented liquidity issues in 2017.
The company temporarily suspended its listing on the AIM, and lost more than 60% of its share price as the management looked at its shareholding to raise funds."

I have been picking up bits and bobs this week. Things with long dates that are on very good special offers :money:

    coffee
    coconut milk
    pesto sauce
    Linda Mac sausages

I have organised my extra cupboard space and sharpied the use buy dates on things so they are easier to read. Will take my strong son to the shop tomorrow to get more cat food as it is the one thing we can't run out of if it all goes pear shaped.

Despite buying more food etc this month, we seem to be saving money which is odd. Should do this all the time! (the savvy shopping, not the Brexit) :)
