Ever thought of making your own Xmas decorations from bits around the home or from work? MSE Tony’s wife has been sharing some of the creations made at the college where she works, including a tree from books and even a fireplace. So what do you think?

Have you given it a go or are you tempted to? Let us know and send us pics of your Xmas efforts.

  • Every year in October we collect lots of pretty and brightly coloured leaves just fallen from the trees. Favourites are red Japanese maple, brown oak, orange beech and yellow ginko. We press them between newspaper, changing the papers a couple of times to get the leaves really dry.
Then we string them on button thread and hang them around our rooms instead of paper chains etc.

They're pretty and unusual and rustle very lightly when the fire is lit.

We take them down in January, and put them on the fire while drinking mulled wine to toast the new year.
  • We make our own paper chains and cards each year and our tree is covered in decorations the kids make using salt dough and craft bits and pieces or from children I've taught through the years. We've made popcorn strings before but the kids prefer to just eat it so we've not got those this year.

We have a scrap shop that sells odd bits and pieces, packaging etc. for pennies nearby and this year I got some really large yarn centres (29cm tall cones) and DS and DD made a table top Christmas trees each for the middle of our dining room table.

Our advent calendars are home made and we make tiny jars into glitter and tissue paper covered treasures and fill them with tea lights for extra sparkle around the table and ledges.

Our nativity set is knitted to make sure the kids can play with it without worry of breakage and they are always sad to see it put away.

We do have a shop purchased tree top star and xmas lights and some beads plus a tall gifted Father Christmas ornament...but otherwise everything here is made by us or for us. A close friend made the nativity set.
  • We decorate our home with fresh flower arrangements on the Christmas occasion.
