    Hi All (again)

so the consensus seems to be that the disc-based xbox might be the way to go (see above for reasons) rather than the digital version.

I was blissfully unaware that the disc based version came with an in-built bluray player as standard (so if it fails (for whatever reason) you are left with (in effect) the digital version of the xbox - assuming this failed - would disc based games not be able to be played (only downloaded)?

Will look into getting a disc-based console instead of the digital version and getting the games via disc (he keeps mentioning Sea of Thieves and I think Game were doing the disc for £20 a little while ago).

    Thanks

    It's entirely up to you.

I just thought I'd mention there is a cheaper alternative, afterall it is a money saving website.

If your son is going to play alot of games, you might find he doesn't play some after a while and you can trade them in.

Yep, the disk based games would be unusable if the disk drive failed, but you have the option of playing digital games, or replacing the disk drive. I'm on PS4 and I'm as often using it to play movies as I am games, so wouldn't want to ever go disk free - unless they come up with a second hand digital games market system.

Disc based console is the way to go. You can buy everything digitally for it if you want. But always have the option of using discs

You might see an interesting game at a reduced price in a shop with the digital console you wouldn't be able to play it. It might save a bit of money on the console but you'd likely end up paying more for games.

On a side note does anybody else hate the term digital meaning the downloads as the disc are digital as well. All my computer's and consoles having been using disc and cartridges that are digital since they stopped using audio cassettes.

(its all right having a disc based system, until it develops a problem and needs resolving, if everything has moved on (and you can't resolve it) where do you turn)?

If the disc based console develops a fault then you return it to the seller (whether its Amazon, Game, Tesco etc). It can be easier to just contact Microsoft and start the repair process with them but your contract is ultimately with the seller so you should persist with them.

Digital is the future yes but it all depends if the games retailers will kick up a fuss over it. People will still use the disc drive based console as they have discs they own.

We are looking at the disc-based system (ideally we want an offer that contains S of T (but can get that as a stand-alone disc), 2 x wireless controllers & 1 x headset) but am open to any of the above combination (we can get items not included in a particular bundle offer seperately if needed.

Currently, still looking at offers, Argos had a Fortnite themed offer for £199 (purple console + 2 wireless controllers) but when I tried to order it, all of them had gone unfortunately!

    TIA

If its something that can wait then have a look at what Black Friday will bring. Obviously if your wanting to get it in the next couple of weeks then might not be a good idea.

Argos specialise in being out of stock. All you can do is keep checking there and elsewhere or wait for black friday like others suggest.
