Around this time last year a redundancy threat at work shocked me into actually looking at my finances properly, and it wasn't a pretty sight.

I'm now officially debt-free, but have no savings. I'm now in a new department at work, with a new manager, colleagues and ways of working which is all a bit stressful and I'm not entirely convinced this is going to work out, so there still may be trouble ahead.

I want to have at least a year's living expenses in a 'freedom fund' so that if things do get bad, I have some options. I'd also like to move within the next year so will need some money to cover expenses for that.

I'm aiming at 15,000 by at least this time next year. The numbers on my budget don't really add up to that, but I'm going to give it my best shot

bestlifenow, welcome to the forum. It is great that you are thinking of saving to plan for the future. Redundancy threats loom a bit too often in this climate so your plan to stay prepared is a wise one, I wish you well.

Hi savingwannabe, thank you for the welcome.

At least the redundancy threat shocked me into sorting out the debt. Yesterday's shock was the prospect of having to wait until 70 for my state pension, and the state of my finances means I would have to work until then. I'm keeping this in mind when I feel like spending money

Day off today and a long weekend ahead

I've got my payslip, so I know how much I'm getting paid next week and I can spend some time this weekend looking at what I've spent this month and working out next month's budget. I'm strangely looking forward to it.

I also need to defrost the fridge-freezer and give it a good clean out this weekend. Not looking forward to that so much

Other than that, I have no plans and I'm really looking forward to just pottering around and having a rest.

Well, it feels like summer is well and truly over.

I didn't defrost and clean the freezer, and only had a half-hearted attempt at a budget. I've mentally been giving myself time off since I've paid off the debt and things have started to drift again, so now's the time to set some new goals for the next few months until Christmas.

I've had another, proper go at a budget which includes emergency savings and I'm going to let that build up in my current account for the next few months.

I'm thinking about moving within the next 12 months and I think I could need about 3000 for that. My plan is to try to build that fund from extra money making and keep it in a separate account.

If I'm going to move, I need to declutter, clean and do some general tidying up where I am now, so that's another goal.

My main goal at the moment is to try and lose some weight and get a bit fitter. I've not really looked after myself physically for a while and it's starting to affect my day-to-day life now, so it's time for some action, I think.

I really will deal with the freezer this weekend

Well, here I am up at silly o'clock due to my neighbours. The noise has been going on since half past 3, I think they must have been out before that. I think I'm going to wait til they go to bed and start doing my hoovering

For now, this is good motivation to get my moving fund together and get out of here, so off to enter some competitions and do some surveys.

I did fall asleep for a couple of hours again this morning when the neighbours went quiet, but now I feel all out of sorts. They seem to have been up again since 9ish and more people have arrived, so I can't really relax. How are they managing on 3 hours sleep?

This has happened before over the years, and then it goes quiet for a while, but I think I've lost my tolerance for it as I've got older.

Bearing this in mind, I've had a rethink about the financial goals and priorities, and the moving fund must come first; this is the emergency! So, until there's a moving fund in place, every penny is a prisoner and it's all out for the extra pennies coming in.

Lack of sleep is awful. As a parent I remember sleepless nights when my son was growing up (now 24yo) and more recent years when we got a puppy it was a killer. Definitely the older you get the less you can cope with little or no sleep

Hope you manage to save enough to move soon and have nicer quieter neighbours at your new place.

Woken up to the rain this morning, which was actually quite pleasant because I don't need to go out in it

I've been so busy with work recently that I haven't had time to think about anything else. The de-cluttering is going very slowly, but I'm trying to clear at least one thing every day, even if it's only a piece of paper. I'll get there eventually.

I have at last finished the fridge freezer and re-stocked with some batch cooking, so that I've got something to grab for work or for after work when I'm short of time.

I haven't spent much money, so that's good. I haven't made very much, so that needs some attention.

My goal for the next 5 weeks is to complete the moving fund before I get paid for October. I need to have another very frugal month with September's wage and to earn about 300 extra. I think it's doable if I focus and get on with it.

Well done on decluttering even though you have been busy at work. It's fab that you have batch cooked. Good luck with moving fund and the rest of the month. If you can make 300 that will be great.

Decluttering one item per day is an awesome idea - I may have to steal that one! I want to declutter my house but the task always feels so completely overwhelming that I never get round to actually starting!

Batch cooking is such a fab idea - what foods do you batch cook? My "batch cooking" is currently limited to making a large amount of bolognaise sauce and serving that for dinners or lunches throughout the week but it does get rather boring pretty quickly

Hi pinknsparkly, what a lovely name My batch cooking is nothing exciting, just pasta and sauce, or rice and veg - just something I can grab on the way out to work or microwave when I get in from work.

On the financial front, it looks as if I have enough money coming in through the month to reach my moving savings goal before next payday. This is as long as I don't spend anything except the 30 in my purse, which is doable, except there are some things that I want to buy.

I have been on a bit of a spending spree the last couple of months. I can't shake off the feeling there may be trouble ahead - maybe at work, I can't help but think about a big company like Thomas Cook going under and workers just out of a job with no notice. Throw in Br exit and winter, and I feel like I need to be a bit more prepared.

With that in mind, I want to have a supermarket delivery for a bit of a stock-up for winter for things that I can't carry very well.

I've also started to study a course related to work which I'm hoping will give me some other options in the future. I need a light laptop or a tablet that I can carry with me, I'm not sure which would be best for that.

So, financial focus for the rest of this month is to make a bit more money to pay for these two things, and make sure I have my moving fund in place.

Hurrah for your moving fund. You have raised that so quickly well done. I think once you have experienced a threat to your job it makes you hypersensitive to it happening again. It has happened to me also. In a way it is good as it keeps you on your toes so you can see opportunities before others do.

With regard to a laptop or tablet remember you maybe able to get a perfectly decent one second hand via fleabay etc.I must do some of this batch doodah cooking. Im learning loads from all of you lovely members of the forum.

Hope you are having a good day and resting.

You are doing so well and every time the neighbours annoy you it will keep you focused. Batch cooking is so good, just imagine how much you save not buying lunch at work. Ive been stocking up the cupboards too and a quick trip to Iceland filled my newly cleaned freezer and saved me numerous trips to the supermarket. I think its wise to be careful the way things are at the moment.
