    Updated summer 2019

    Hello,
I been reading debt free diaries and mortgage free diaries since the summer and I have been hugely inspired and reassured my dreams are achievable.

My husband was significantly in debt until early 2013 through a failing business during the recession. Due to having equity in our home I was able (had to) to re-mortgage and pay off the debts. that's the simple version anyway.

During the time when my husbands income was negligible we had a lodger. We moved house in 2018 to downsize and reduce the mortgage. We had a lodger and after info from here did Airbnb for a couple of years.

He gets about 200 pcm pensions plus 900 wage, of this 300 is saved this year into share schemes. I'm also saving in S&S ISA

I have a fairly good job and have always worked extra hours. After many money related traumas and battles our relationship is fantastic.

My aim is to retire at 55 if I can. I am going to go hell for leather to make this happen. We trimmed our expenses years ago. We have the occasional slip up and overspend in fact this year has been an overspend on some big items whist shopping at lld1 and Aldi.

Mortgage OPs are on hold whilst we renovate the house which needed twice as much as we anticipated.

    [QUOTE=A Frayed Knot;76405738]

I received a Christmas Card saying "Your 1st Christmas in your New Home"

I was staying with my Mum at the time and the card was from my Mum so I
    moved in on Christmas Eve

Well the quote thing failed.... but laughed at that story

Blinds ordered from Blinds2go... best value and what I liked https://www.blinds-2go.co.uk/roller-blinds/17987/summer-meadow-magenta.html

Chumpy I'm sure I sit far too much and contemplate. I'm not as motivated as I used to be and that frustrates me

I managed to get to the gym today but I've done little else. I have only had 3 hours sleep post night shift. I'm on a study day tomorrow. I imagine it will be dull as dishwater

Day off today. I've decided I'm not going to training this am to rehash things I know. We did a study on Tuesday which was memorable in it's oddness It was resilience training for emergency care staff... The lecture on pelvic floor was quite unexpected. We were howling at its ill fitting to the title. apart from we can't have toilet breaks therefore need a stronger inner workings

I'm going to have to give in and top up my funds. Fridge is bare, petrol tank has 20miles left. I did an airport run earlier in the month and my OH has a liking to always using my car.... even when his car was my car he used it! He usually uses excuses of parking outside the house will be taken rather than he's out of petrol in it. Train tickets, Gas top up extra 20... winter is coming and I work too hard to be cold.

DD2 has paid me back some money this am as its her pay day. 150. However I had taken from other places so mostly repaid that to the bills account, with a smidge to our savings. She has her driving test in December. I will have to revisit housekeeping with her as she is home a lot lately and wants heating in her room, 3 meals a day!! I suggested she buys a payday treat of a mealdeal. she bulked at the idea and is taking a tin of soup and bread and butter crisps and biscuits for free. Shame it's me and her dad providing it

I booked the tickets to Edinburgh 75. I wonder if OH will pay me back as its his trip ? Ticketysplit comes in 20 cheaper than train line The connections seem easy enough. I have made that journey a couple of time through the shortest connections and its doable ( if on time )

We have lovely fresh white painted door frames and skirtings upstairs and OH papered it yesterday We do need the light casing sorting before the other wall can be completed, The other walls are the higher longer pieces that OH is clearly saving until last … putting off the danger. mind you I would rather be home to foot the ladder. I don't fancy cashing in life insurance just yet... I think we need more satinwood paint ..

I seem to have attacked the rest of my saving pots I had an eye test last Friday, free from my husbands employer … I need proper glasses. I'm going to try varifocals as the on off business gets on my nerves. 80 per pair or 2 pairs 120 - 10% discount. I'm getting 2 pairs. Next item of personal care is a visit to the dentist. I know I need some repair work so that's likely to be a few hundred

I feel less excited for payday than I usually am. I think it's because I have done my budget for the year I'll have a pending payment in my bank tomorrow then Wednesday (payday) I am working.

I've had a nice mooch around a local town that's a bit "well to do" . I want a mirror for my hall. I couldn't find one new or used. Some gorgeous clothes shops looked but not spent . I found a glass shop to give me quotes for my hall windows. The 3 top plain windows have come in at 140 … I thought was ok until OH said its about a fiver for a pain of glass

OH is currently papering the living room. We need the radiator back on in there this week. It's so cold. Plumber is warned

I've sold the remaining shower screen that wasn't needed on the bay for some reason I owed the money to OH... I have to keep him sweet

I have completely blown my diet and exercise this weekend, I've eaten far too much and had wine last night meaning I didn't go to my exercise class this am. I'm going to finish today off with ribeye, home made chips and red wine.

    NG fantastic excuse

I've been hankering after a picture for my living room for most of the year. I was supposed to buy it with my long service award but it is only online from JL. Seen as lovely husband has almost completed the front room papering I've ordered it. I've ordered the smaller size so 60 cheaper, but it will finish off the room beautifully when its sitting above the fireplace

I can't find a mirror for the hall yet that I like "that" much. pressed pause on that for now. Although my attention has now jumped to wondering whether to get radiator covers …

Today I have a few things planned, DD1 is to do my hair later.. I'm not sure if we are to have GD later so DD1 can work in the chippy. A trip to bnq is required for more satinwood paint and light switches. We need to sink the outside bathroom fitting I was hoping in that lot to get to the gym and cook something for work meals tomorrow and Thursday. I may start to varnish the stripped banisters too

Well I didn't varnish the banisters. I seem to have found my "off" switch. located between the fridge and the couch I've gone from bouncing around to not being at all bothered. I briefly wondered if it's SAD, whilst looking for excuses but likely to be greed and laziness finding it's way back to the forefront I'm dressed in gym gear... GD due for the day, and I've only had 6 hours sleep as OH woke me when he came in. He left me wine chocolate and crisps for when I finished work last night. Wrote me a little love note on the bottle , ... it is sabotage . and I'm letting it happen

My new bathroom blinds arrived yesterday... the pattern in great but the background colour is more cream than white … I don't send things back, I don't know if I can... I just hope they work. A little deflated. Hopefully will be restored after the are hung. However OH has finished papering the living room and it looks lovely

The hall is still a work in progress. We need plumber (who does electrics) to change light fittings and sink the raised bathroom switch he did earlier in the year. He needs to rehang the living room radiator. There is also an old immersion switch that GD turned on last week. That needs removing and capping off. The next papering is all the awkward bits around the stairs. We have a funeral to go to Monday and I'm on nights next week. That means OH may only do a bit when I'm up and by that time he's usually given up The hall glazing is annoying me as it makes everything else look bad. I might drive out to a glazers later. The quote for the patterned glass never arrived, seen as the other quote was excessive I never chased it up.

30 OP today to bring mortgage down to 108500
interest Aug 66, Sept 186, Oct 179 … I've not quite figured that one out yet... FD must have a plan

Due to forgotten expenses I may have just left myself with 150 for food
Now my cash pots are healthy, and DD1 says she'll give me something on her payday. But I am likely to take from one pot to support the other. Glazing and carpets are likely to be my big spends

My friend text so I went to boot camp

We had a drive to the glazers. They are a local company who have moved to bigger premises in the next town. He told me the quote I got for the upper glazing was about 100 too much for supply only. He said if I choose patterned standard glass it will around 350 fitted. If I choose designer, it will be around 500. I can't remember what he said for leaded double glazed, however he is coming to measure and quote on Monday I just need to choose between leaded and designer

I want to cancel our March holiday. I will be needing term time hols for the next 3 years or there about and I can't afford to lose the classes. It is all still up in the air as my interview is mid December, 2 weeks after the balance is due. My timetable will still not be available I will need to investigate how my 500 deposit can be used and transferred to something else. This of course then frees up money to make our home prettier

I like the idea of radiator covers too but worry how much they will block the heat. Hope plumber is back soon to do radiator now that papering is done. Sounds like it is all coming together on the home improvements.

I have worried about that too.… my old radiators are quite dated but roasting. I'll think some more

I've found a holiday to change my March hol to. I just hope the company are ok with it. It will leave me 900 to pay but a few more months to pay it. Meaning I can redirect money to house or ccs (590 paid this month to bring all to zeros at the end)

New bathroom blinds look ok,,, I suppose there are so many colours in them a variance in the background colour is not a problem OH will get to add the trims when he gets to them I suppose
I'm lucky he put the blinds up

mammoth GD babysitting this week. We had promised DD1 a night out today which now starts at 12 md?? I have GD overnight. I'm working tomorrow and I am not looking forward to her dramas at bedtime as she doesn't like sleepovers. Or being kicked all night by the wriggler. she will wake up like an angel. I have arranged to go into work an hour late tomorrow. GD can sit on the couch until DD2 or OH gets up.

I've booked into the 4.30 boot camp

We survived the excessive childcare of the last week... although I did have to fork out for birthday present for GD to take to a party, then new jarmies for her as DD1 didn't bring any (TBH I've noticed they don't fit so didn't mind, she's soon to be a big tall 6 yo ) then she wanted a toy !! homeandB thankfully had shopkins for 4.99... it was the best 4.99 I've ever spent. It kept her occupied for 4 hours!!!!

We did have hocus pocus on in the background (What's a virgin Nanny?? ) someone who is innocent and pure Thankfully no tears at bedtime this time. But I still got elbowed for most of the night

Boot camps completed Friday, Saturday and today I'm on nights tonight for 4 nights. Hopefully my head can be back in the fitness game for a bit

Money wise, I'm still hopeful DD1 will cough up something on her payday. OH payday is Friday so I can reclaim 175 he owes me for the Edinburgh trip. We have the glazing company coming this afternoon. I didn't get the email of the double glazing choices, but I like one of the single glazed options.

I have changed our holiday to June next year saving me 1000 on the balance and the associated spending money. It also stops me worrying about my pending coursework. I did have to make a hundred pound payment today

I managed in work last night with varifocals. I did take them off half way home this morning as my tied eyes couldn't be bothered. I haven't been driving with glasses, however I did feel the benefit in the dark.

Reading a computer is weird and a bit fuzzy in places. I will persevere as the bigger world is much clearer

Plumber here radiator back on in living room, my new picture has arrived and will be hung shortly. We seem to be missing a socket I had bought, but OH chucked the receipt... so I think I bought the socket, OH thinks I did too. 8 and a half quid lost

He has put the bathroom switch into the wall, removed the old immersion switch and changed the sitting room dimmer switch. , things are coming together for the living room and bathroom ( still need tile trims putting on ) At least now OH can carry on with the hall papering … although I think he has been putting off the worst bits

I'm still waiting for the quote from the glazers. I wonder if they sent it to my email address. They said they would send a catalogue last week and I didn't get it. The measuring guy did say he would text the quote. Anyhow, its likely to be around the 500 mark so I will go for it as the hall glazing is an eyesore (to me)

I bought a mirror in the r@ange, quite simple design, rectangle, with the frame still being the mirror. I also dipped into saving pots as OH has been looking a bit untidy. He's living in the very cheap primark joggers that he was never supposed to leave the house in. I treated him to a couple of pairs from next and a new sweatshirt and T's. He's still wearing the tatty joggers

Another busy week has gone by. I don't usually work nights in the early part of the week, but generally nice shifts. I picked up my glasses on Tuesday. I'm still struggling a bit on the computer. One pair too tight and the other too loose. I've had to return for slight adjustments. I will preserver, although I do look a bit daft constantly moving my head to get in focus

GD loved the fireworks OH did for her... "Nanny I'm so lucky you married granddad otherwise I wouldn't have anyone to do this for me" Obvs biology is lost at this point but she said that with excitement and knowing we are there rather than has a part time Dad. She has never missed out on anything (hence DD1s mahoosive debt )

My sister arrived Wednesday for a couple of nights. I ended up sorting the room OH has been promising for weeks to sort it out. He has been using it as an inside shed, as well as the shed and under the stairs. I did find a file I needed and managed to chuck out some old wicker storage boxes.

I have decluttered a huge bag of clothes and trainers to our works homeless collection. I need OH to sort his out. We've had a few instances lately were people in need literally are left with nothing to go home or to the streets in

Glass is ordered for the hall. We've given next Wednesday or W/c 18th for fitting Having a nice home is a lot more exciting than a holiday

So I am off the weekend. I will go to boot camp later, which will likely be painful again. I literally though I would have a stroke last week. I had wine and half a chippy tea last night. not exactly healthy again I may paint the upstairs doors later when OH gets up He is going to finish the hall papering this week We have all of the supplies needed.

DD1 has said she will give me some money next week … mmm I won't hold my breath. OH I let off with only repaying me 100. ( keeping him sweet ) DD2 has bought us xmas gifts of concert tickets for next

Todays MSE events was nipping to lid1 twice to use 2 vouchers. unfortunately I had to buy the mail to get them. I managed to double up on loo rolls and bleach. restocked baking items, and bought kindling for the fire I did overspend slightly, but it is all stuff we will use over the next month or 2

Now I don't think I will make it through the month on 6.66 that is left in my current account. My pulse surveys only need 2 paid to payout $5 , usually around the 4 mark. The promises money from DD1 might just get me petrol

Our TV has developed a problem it has white noise and stripes through the start. more often than not it takes 2 or 3 times to start. I'm hopeful it lasts to xmas. OH seems to think its the sky box... neither of us has checked it out though. WE have had the set more than 13 years and had it fixed twice. I do wonder if it can be fixed again.

You are probably right. OH works in a supermarket and they have staff 20% off soon rather than 10%. I've walked through JLewis once or twice this year and their Tvs are amazing. But I expect the price tag would be too

I'm planning to paint doors this afternoon. I've given my husband a nudge to start papering the less awkward bits of the hall and stairs. He's been to the shops to get filler for were they put in the electrics. I will not be leaving the house today or spending a penny

Woo hoo, my lovely husband has finished wallpapering the hall

I have not been too shabby either, I have given our dark wood living room door and frame 2 coats of white paint, both sides. It makes a huge difference to the hall and living room . I did want 2 new doors for downstairs but I'm not yet ready to pay put 600.

Yesterday, I gave the banister another coat of nitromores and a scrub with wire wool. Hopefully I can continue up the staircase tomorrow now OH has completed his mammoth task We will also need to paint the kitchen door and 3 upstairs. After the glazing is done and OH has had a rest I will order the stairs and landing carpets We do need a picture rail for the hall, but that will come at some point

I didn't do any further work on the banisters, but did paint all doors with another coat. 9 sides in total. plus a couple of skirtings and frames. I've used 2.4L satinwood paint Unfortunately the kitchen door is yellowing, must be the previous stain coming through. A third coat definitely needed there also.

New mirror put up and looks great

I'm going for coffee with a friend later. It always seems like a chore. She's like an old shouty aunty and I'm the youngest of the group, (did I ever mention my husband is 11 years older than me ) Then I feel guilty and relieved at the same time its been and gone. As couples we are not as close as we used to be. They hurt us after upset with our teenagers, exclusion really… then gossiped about us when OH lost everything. Another friend put them in their place. They then spent some time trying to make up again as time passed. I've accepted a monthly coffee, but feel resentful too. I try to make the effort as I can easily bear a grudge. Plus OH doesn't see his old friends. Keeping the connection can be nice, I've said we will do Sunday lunch. My only free Sunday is the end of the month

I'm on nights tonight, for 4 of them. I've had 6 lovely days off. I always feel back to work blues as I just love being at home. But hey bills need to be paid
