Couple with kids jsa?

If a couple with three kids who at the moment the husband is working. But he knows the company will soon be liquidated.

He will have to claim jsa soon.

The wife never worked for years, she is a housewife and full time mother.

Do both husband and wife have to go and sign on together? Or just one of them?

The youngest child is 4

Can the husband make a joint claim and only he has to go and sign on every two weeks or whatever?

They claim as a couple but because of the child only he signs on. However, claiming Income Related JSA won't be possible if their area is a full UC area, they need to check this first.

Any capital/savings over £6,000 will affect any possible claim. £16,000 and over they won't be able to claim means tested benefits.

    Thanks Poopy

Even with a four yr old, only the husband has to sign on?

How can somebody check the area thing you talked about?

I know I'm clueless about these things, but what's the difference between income related jsa and UC?

Is UC better? It sounds less stigma just to say I'm on UC, because pretty uch everybody will be on UC in one way or another.

Is it the same money at the end of the day?

Just found out we are in the UC area.

What does this mean in practice?

Do we still have to go o the JC and apply for something the same as JSA used o be?

Your postcode has been a Universal Credit full service area since 16 May 2018 and everyone is already asked to claim it if they make a new benefit claim.

If you already claim benefits and some of your circumstances change your entitlements may change too. Check the 'What changes might trigger a move' section below for your options and the ‘Where to get help in your area’ section if you need further advice on what this means for you.

If you already claim benefits and your circumstances don’t change then you won’t be asked to move over to Universal Credit until at least 2019.

Last time you posted you had 4 children, so you would not be able to claim UC.

What happened to your IS and CA claims? Your self employment?

Because the rules say you can’t. You should be looking at Child Tax Credits and Jobseekers Alowance - both claimed as a couple but only have to make the JSA claim and ‘sign on’. You should also look at HOusing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction.
Information I post is for England unless otherwise stated. Some rules may be different in other parts of UK.
