Odd noise from the stove in the sitting room. Open it up to find what looks like a hornet covered in ash. I've been burning smokeless... Slammed the door quickly and closed the vents. Another small fly-like insect fell out, which I squished and threw out of the window.

Any ideas what to do about the hornet??

They are no bother out of doors. I'd just open the window, open the fire door, stand clear and see if it could fly off.

If injured, a quick burst of fly spray. I'm not for putting it into a nursing home! :rotfl:

I like hornets - when they live in trees. There was a nest in the dead willow last year. And I happily let wasps nest anywhere where they won't get annoyed by me.

I'm just worried what happens if it's cross when it comes out, and if it decides to hide somewhere else instead of going out. Plus it's covered in ash, so is bound to make a hell of a mess ... Think I might leave it till tomorrow to deal with!

If it's injured it'll have to be dealt with using a dictionary. I don't have fly spray as I don't tend to need to kill insects. Flies go out of open windows too. The only thing I usually have an issue with is spiders.

Dave - Hope DW is managing to take in easy.
We're both taking it easy, because now I have the bug too! :(We go out, do a bit, come in and groan at each other, fall asleep and then go out again.....Something is getting done, but very slowly. :o

We're not the only ones with a bug; the posh new telly got one as well and stopped speaking to its sound bar. We called-up the service number and some bloke in the Philippines took control of it and sorted it all remotely. The guy said the TV had a virus and promised it wouldn't happen again. I don't know how he can be so sure, unless it's a known issue. Anyway, 'Bargain Hunt' in super stereo whatever again....marvellous! :rotfl:

The weirdos next door get weirder. Eldest child was18 this week, announced she was going to have a new name and be transgender. Don't think Dad & Mum are happy.;) The other two also have issues.....one can't go anywhere crowded and the other can't go anywhere, full stop. On the plus side, they are all very quiet. :D

Our new neighbour in Horse Woman's place is extremely happy with her purchase and says she feels very much at home here. Mind you, she's not had the rain & wind yet! I was in a garden centre down in Barnstaple a few days ago and felt a tinge of remorse viewing all those fancy plants I know would be just blown to bits up here.......

Well Greenbee - Best of luck. Spiders are rather good at eating flies - but a hornet is too big otherwise it would need a gut big spider to tackle it.

It may be deaded in the morning - swallowed all the ash. They must be getting in down the stove pipe?

Dave - that bug is doing the rounds here and folks keep getting it back. Elderly neighbour has it & I don't want it. Up there today as I am every day. Starting to feel my life has been taken over.

The transgender thing with kids seems to be quite trendy - more than ever.
Glad new neighbour seems quite nice. Wish we had some normal ones. Ones just moved in down the road a couple of months back - into a house right on the road and are now complaining about the traffic. The NC500 is quite annoying with the place getting treated like a race track but if you minded traffic you wouldn't ave bought a house next to a road. The weather has been quite rubbish as well and that is not going down too well with them I hear.

Hope the bug goes - I laughed about the TV having the virus.

Hot toddy for both you & DW Dave. I'm away to cut OH's hair - a quick run round with the clippers.

Gaghh! So much to catch up on, it must mean the weather is good, and I'm out every spare moment. Either that, or blind drunk.....:D

Hornets... We have them in part of the roof most years so far. I removed them one year when we had a builder (remember I gave space for a builder to park his caravan up as he'd been kicked out of the marital whatnot? Chocolate teapot or what? Any job he spent a couple of hours on, I spent a day fixing! He has left...) on it, but otherwise, they buzz around quite contentedly. I do evict them from the house if they visit, and wouldn't really want them living in my stove or socks drawer. But, for the most part, they are harmless.

I try not to kill any insects I don't have to; I killed too many in my active research days, so try to give them a break. Maybe, when it's my time to go, the Great Sky Hornet Who Must Be Praised will give me a break.

Had another near-rush to hostipal. Phoned GP to make an appointment, receptionist took details, said it sounded urgent, put me through to GP, who took symptoms and said he had better get an ambulance out pronto, when did the symptoms start? "er... November..." :D But, at least I got an unheard-of same-day-seeing, so not all bad. They can't figure out why my bp (110/65) and heart rate (60) suddenly spike to 170/120 and hr 130 and i can barely breathe for a while, then return to normal. When the ambulance crew were here six weeks ago, I knew... How they could despatch the lovely Sophie as crew (there, breathe gently and slowly while I take your pulse and pressure.... hmmm, it's going up... here, let's peer into your eyes and check they are OK, my your bp is going through the roof....). She's probably killed more (happy) pensioners than she'll ever know. :rotfl:

My tractor oil pump was failing, and I fixed it! Amazed I managed, didn't even have bits left over.

Lambs and goats are all fine and bouncy, goats run the farm now, we do as we are told. I'm planting trees, they eat them, it works, but would be easier if they left them to grow a bit first. I spend much of my day reading work stuff, sitting under a tree, snoozing in fact, while a marauding herd of destruction flattens anything green, flowery, or book-like, then stamps on me to wake me up. I did have a straw hat, but I must have left it somewhere ...

It's amazing that, only on the last page, we were all moaning about floods and freezing...

Choille... Gators and their ilk are great, if rather pricey. The ones I have met have all had variable transmission, which made them easy to drive, but it was always breaking, so made them even more expensive. My little tractor is slower (it will do 18mph) but probably more versatile, and a damn lot cheaper!

Anyway, the farm is bliss at the moment. Bird and butterfly explosion, blossom and flowers covering the fields. I'm off to pretend I'm doing something!

    Enjoy the sun, don't melt!

Dafty - the animals and what you have managed to achieve sound marvellous but - as you know - you must get to the bottom of your health issues. You will have to be referred to some specialist/ Okay joking about pretty Sophie but it's seriously needing looked into - Choille's stern telling off over.
The tractor thing is hampered by the steep rough ground. I don't know what would be suitable.

I have to go to neighbour's now to run round with the hoover as it's getting a bit desperate.

    gloriously hot here !
the grockles are out in force....

did a boot sale yesterday and I reckon there was at least 300+ cars selling . I sold a bit but to be honest I packed up early and went to look around .

the flies are out in force annoying the horses so will have to spray them all tonight.

im a tad cross with the lad I "shunted" in my accident.
he told me next day he had to get a hire car from his insurance. told me he was ok but a sore neck,
ive just received a copy of his claim for injuries ! which he lodged NEXT day .... it states he has whiplash and lower back injury BUT reading through.... "have you received medical attention / advice?"...NO "have you been off work"....YES "have you medical advice to be off work"....NO "have you needed a hire vehicle replacement"...NO
his address is different from the one he gave me too ???
also he states cars were slowing down and I slammed into him... he omitted to say that 4 cars slammed on, he missed the car in front of him by INCHES ! luckily I have this on car camera.... the driver thanked him for NOT hitting her !!
so be interesting to see what comes of this with no medical references ?
I hate people who think they can make a fast buck and have £££s in their eyes ! gggrrrr

son is outside shovelling off weeds from the paths off the patio so better show willing and go help !!

have a good bank holiday peeps

They're cracking down on whiplash claims Alfie, so I suspect he'll find your insurance company take a pretty dim view (as will his own). Give them all the details and leave them to it.

No sign of the hornet this morning, so cleaned out the stove and shut it quickly :) Might have a small fire tonight just to make sure anything thinking of living in the chimney changes its mind.

Gardening and log splitting here. I'm doing a barrow load of logs at a time. TBH dragging the log splitter out of the garage is probably the hardest bit of the job - once I get going the rest is tedious but not particularly hard work. That might change when I get to the really big bits of course...

We've been to the local food fair and managed to spend a bit of time in a beer garden. Not too sure how that happened but it was enjoyable. Youngest DD turned 18 yesterday, so we were out and about with her.

Ebay is busy got 45 parcels to do tomorrow, sorry 46 another one just sold.

I'm hoping OH will attack the hedge later, it hasn't been cut for a few years and has started to attack me when I'm cutting the lawns. It is really more hole than hedge and I'm hoping it will get grubbed out when we sort the parking out. Still waiting for a quote for that.

Had to contact the landlord as the boiler is having a slow lingering death and barely producing hot water. I really need this to be sorted by the end of the month as the newly turned 18 year old is having a joint party with her sister who turns 21 at the beginning of June. The house will be full of people and the day after the party we are going to Ladies Day at the races.
