We are currently on SVR paying just 1.5% BUT I am tempted to look at a fixed rate asap

Have a read of Martin's guides to mortgages on the main site - with interest rates on the increase now might be a good time to look for a new deal - try your current lender first perhaps to see what fixes they have currently. From where you're at right now rates are only going to increase - if it were me, I'd want the security of knowing that the increase is capped for a few years.
