No subfloor?

Really need advice.

We have had a bit of a dispute with our builder who we have now got rid of but we have massive concerns over the new floor. At the time he said he would use all the rubble that lay from knocking down walls instead of concrete for the subfloor. He said between that and some blinding he would 'whack' it and that would make it as strong as concrete. Is this acceptable? At the time when we questioned it he said building control approved it but building control do not recall this! HELP! We are now in the house and screed and all is down 2 months, if there is an issue we will have to dig up all of it

A worried home owner.

Are you saying the builder used hardcore ( old building material ) for the floor rather than concrete? did they then put a layer of screed on top of it?

It does not sound right. Is there any insulation in the floor?

Yeah he used the rubble and blinding he said. Then insulation and screed. Although the screed has cracked in the walk in wardrobe and its evident that there's only about 1cm in that particular area :(

He did, he used kingspan sheets. Our plans recommended 15cm but I think there's only about 10. Architect says that should be ok though, but now our concern is the subfloor.

Screed can go on top of insulation(min 65mm), but there should be concrete under the insulation.
  • For him to say building control were ok with this is a blatant lie then. And to make matters worse, he quoted for the flooring as to plans so he has been paid for something he didnt do. Although we are increasingly finding other things he has been paid for that haven't been done to spec. My last conversation with building control was that they had no record of the floor being ready to go down and builder was to provide photos to prove it was as guy couldn't come out to see it before screed was put down.

Up until we asked him to leave he had about 90% of the quote. There was some extras he quoted for which isn't included in that so it could be just less than 90% if we were to include that. We should have known something was up when he constantly asked for money and there was little progress to show. We had complete trust, we knew him.
