Solid wood/Composite/uPVC door?

    I used these people for my composite door http://www.valuedoorsuk.co.uk/composite-doors.php
    all there prices are fitted so it is easy to compare styles and colours and security options..As someone said earlier rockdoors are the best which is what I had fitted

    Very impressive and does go some way to show people what they are buying. I have found when asking some suppliers about how their doors are made they are evasive. To me that seems like they don't want you to know and instead use their sales speel to try and convince you they sell quality doors, but will not tell you what they are made of and neither does their brochures. A good quality door manufacturer is only too happy to tell you how the door is made and what legislation and standards in the industry it meets.

    I have now asked a company my sister used who sells doors made by Solidor which are supposed to be market leaders and who sell to large housing organisations, for a quote from them.

    Solidor are not the best composite doors they have a timber core (http://www.solidor.co.uk/specification )which makes them prone to warping something you must have overlooked .My recommendation is Rockdoors

    Which is what I have, so perhaps I should just stick with what I have - a hardwood front door, but I wanted something which retained the heat in the house and was well insulated and you always get draughts with wooden doors.

    Seems you can't win no matter how much you pay or what you buy :(

    I'm surprised I haven't seen anything about external doors and insulation
    My research suggests that solid wooden doors have the lowest insulation, PVC the next better, and composite doors the best. Obviously quality and thickness will affect all of these.

    I will try and get back with the actual figures I found

    Furts' comment about the effects of the weather on doors/ protection from porches is spot on. Our composite front door is 7 years old and is cracked and the finish is coming off much like varnish would peel off. I've contacted the manufacturer for advice on refinishing as it only had a 5 year guarantee unlike the 10 year guarantee on the windows. Think about the weathering your door will receive and ask lots of questions about the durability of the finish. At least with a wooden door you can repaint....
