Hi Ice,
thanks a million for your great posting. When I showed it to my partner it made him realise that he has a problem and he went to our local CAB the next day to see a debt councellor. His next appointment is for Monday. It all looks so much brighter now.
Thank you very much again .

the CAB are vital and do a great job
but in newcastle its almost impossible to ring them or get to see them.
they use the 0870 numbers and you never get connected.
the only way I ahve got friends into see them is to go to an office and sit there until you are seen - 5 hours in one case.
the gov really need to put some money into the CAB as the ppl who really need it most are neing neglected.
also lets employ some ppl as the volunteeers really should be paid
Gnever take advice from broke or unsuccessful people

heres a question for this subject cos I can't find anywhere else to put it and cant post my own topic.
1998 - applied for Homeowner loan to current building society. Received the money later that year to pay off business debts. A verbal agreement was reached to pay the money back over the remaining term of the mortgage at the standard mortgage rate. Since then no further correspondence from building society re. repaying the loan or expected repayment schedule. There has been no written confirmation that the loan had been granted, how much for or over what period. A loan application form had been filled in at the time and submitted.
Assuming that the first payment should have started in Feb 1999, will the whole loan be regarded as statute barred in Feb 2005?0 -
I totally agree with gibby, it is also very difficult to get to see the CAB in Swindon. They only open on about 3 days a week and not at weekends which would make it easier for people who work during the week to get to see them. Also the hours they work are something like 10-3! They definately need more funding.0

I was just wondering if you could please tell me what the CAB's views are of restructuring short/medium unsecured
Hi MortgageX
I'm a CAB trainee adviser. We've been taught from the start that it's not our job to make decisions for people, just to give them the information they need. We cannot and should not attempt to run people's lives for them, even though there are people out there who maybe would like someone (like the CAB!) to make a decision for them, to absolve them of the responsibility. At our bureau we refer people to the Money Advice Centre at the Civic Centre. There are also specialist Benefit Advisers, although we mostly do a Benefit Check just to see if the person is claiming all they're entitled to. Anything more complex and we refer it to the specialist Benefit Advisers.

Hi. I've never done this before so if I'm in the wrong place sorry! I'm a student and got into debt in my first year and had to take a loan out with the bank (Natwest). Since then I'm in a constant spiral. I have to pay £99.53 a month in repayments so can never get out of my overdraft. I've been to see the advice centre here and they've spoken to Natwest for me but Natwest have said that they won't do anything with regards to my loan until I go over my overdraft and thus get further into debt! How can they do that? I'm trying to be responsible but have to get further into debt before I can get out!0

Mostly six years - As to the above. CSSS only take on the top end of the market in dealing with debt, ie people with some disposable income after essential payments, I hear that Federated credit are now taking clients with just £20 per week disposable income which is an organisation some CAB refer clients to if the client has credit debts of more than £5000 which they owe to more than one lender. They can also advise on IVAs Bankruptcy's and have a system called payplan for straightforward credit debts0
