Makes me chuckle every time I see this thread appear. As I dislike wasting money on things my sisters don't want I ask them about August time what they would like so I have plenty of time to search for offers etc. I am always greeted with cries of "Its to early". Great to know I am well behind many. :)

  • Good Evening:)

I followed this thread avidly last year but didn't post. I hope you don't mind me joining in. This year money is very tight so I've decided to make hampers of handmade gifts. We don't have that many to buy for so I'm going to need three hampers and a few stocking fillers. The boys are all getting vouchers :D

So far on my list I have:-

    1. 9 x pairs of hand knitted wool boot socks - I've almost finished the second pair.
    2. Hand made candles - I've already bought a set of six crystal glasses from the CS for £2.50.
    3. Cake stands - I've read up on how to make them and now I have all Summer to scour local car boots for suitable china plates.

................and that's as far as I've got!

    Hello Love to Knit,

I'm intrigued about your hampers that you are making. Who are they for? I was wondering if you have some sort of a theme for them. When you mentioned the cake stands I started thinking about homemade goodies that might fit in with that sort of theme - cakes, biscuits, shortbread, mincepies (if it had a christmasy theme), homemade jam to go on those scones that might be served on them. You could maybe get a packet of posh tea or their favorite tea to go with it. Not really afternon tea but homemade truffles always go down well and are very easy. I wish I was getting one of your hampers. I love the idea of some cosy homemade socks. I'm afraid I haven't quite got socks worked out yet. Must give it another try.

  • Hi Skogar, I was thinking of calling them Christmas survival hampers. One for DS1 and girlfriend, one for step-son and wife and one for my brother and sister in law. My other sons and step sons are all single so they get cosy socks and vouchers. DS1 and my step son are both in well paid jobs and earn much more money than DH and I so I thought handmade gifts would probably go down well.

You've given me something to think about with the scones - how about cake mix in a jar? Last year I was thinking along the same lines but left it too late. I was also thinking about finding some nice mugs and filling them with sachets of posh hot chocolate and marshmallows and wrapping them up in the clear cellophane that florists use.

I made some truffles a couple of years ago and they were really nice. You can get some lovely boxes on Eb*y and make them look really special.

We've got all summer to scour the carboots and charity shops for all sorts of lovely stuff!

  • I already have a vague idea of a few presents this year, I'm giving my son and his partner dollars as they are off to the states next year. My granddaughter will be getting a tablet when I find one at a good price. I put money away each month when I get paid in a separate bank account, which my mum has the card for so no spending from it :)

I think I've convinced myself to make everything this year. Goodness knows, I have enough fabric!

MIL, FIL - hmmmm...a big set of reusable matching shopping totes? Fancy laptop case? A table runner? Bread bag? all of them!?
SIL - something like this cat bag
    Sister - a makeup bag
Mum - personalised red and white bunting for her kitchen diner
Dad and his wife - Modern pot holders
Elderly local friend - sew a wash bag of some sort
    Boss 1 + 2 - tote bags
Ex's parents - tote and zipper set for her, notebook and cover for him
    OH - ??
    DD - ??
    Best friend - ??

That's 14 people, with 7 months to go. I guess I'm doing two per month, then ;)

I'll also try and make some jams and chutneys as we harvest/forage in the Autumn, to distribute accordingly.
  • The end of july marks a seriously tight upcoming 12 months for me, so I am so pleased to see this Christmas 2017 thread!! I neeeeeeed to keep planning ahead, so its given me the shove to make a start on xmas this year, should be a doddle if I stick to this thread ... love the idea of hampers! I only have a few family - brother and his wife, 2 nephews and their gf's, a cousin and an aunt & uncle who are very dear to me. I have recently started journaling, so shall dedicate a couple of pages to xmas '17!!
im also planning summer '18 (when my dd turns 21) and 2019 when ds's turn 18 and I intend to a long holiday in Australia in the summer to see my sisters ...
I need something to plan - I have just gone through the worst 18 months of my life (split with partner - he had multiple affairs, had to leave my specialist nurse post due to work stress, many health problems that are now all resolved thank heavens, serious debt probs) and I need to have something to look forward to!!
    So, first stop xmas 2017!!!

Yay to zippy for starting it off xxxxxxxxxx

The Works online store has a 25% off payday sale if anyone's interested - lots of crafty bits n pieces for making gifts.

I bought these suitcase sets last Christmas and used them as gift boxes. One suitcase with a themed set of contents from choccie lover to quiz queen.... they went down a treat.
