    Thanks Stuie

I checked with my phone provider, and it was only 2p a minute to call the states, plus a 19p connection fee.

I was only on the phone to the US for just under 5 minutes...checked my latest call charges, and was correctly charged 29p total.
    Don't mind that :)

the old 0161 number u used to be able to call to then call the US, got changed to an 0845 local rate number...
What I didn't know is that 0845 (the old Local rate 1p a min jobby) is a load of Rubbish, and its more like 50p a minute, due to paying a "service" charge + 1p a min, etc...
I think whichever way u look at it, u might have to bite the bullet with a 50p per min phonecall to the US ! :(

    @Rebecca..
You like Hooters ? my kind of gal ! :D:D;)
Mirage is good, not sure at a rate of £300 extra its that good... Only ever used the pool at Excalibur (great pools!) , but then the Mirage pool is pretty dam good.
Mirage is a nice place, but then I am an MGM man, so any of the mgm places are nice! :):):)

Thanks everyone. I loved the MGM but that is ridiculously priced for even the west wing over fight night. I like the location of that end of the strip.

Hooters was nice not too busy, good atmosphere etc I even bought a T shirt 😂

Have you looked at the Tropicana? I haven't stayed there but the casino is newly refurbished and very clean. I liked the atmosphere in there.

0845 numbers ceased to be "local rate" in 2004. These are premium rate numbers. BT supplies most of the 0845 numbers to businesses and for many years BT charged their own retail customers a "discounted" rate to call these numbers. However, revenue sharing meant that other retail providers could not offer these discounts without paying out to BT more than they charged the caller. Ofcom corrected the situation by introducing transparency to pricing with the result that most former users of 084 and 087 numbers now use cheaper 03 numbers.

If you are trying to call the US on the cheap, there are a number of call gateways using 03 numbers where there are no further charges. The 03 call is inclusive in your allowances. If you have a landline with inclusive 0845 or 0870 numbers some call gateways using these numbers can still be called.

I am flying to vegas to play poker in the WSOP main event next week. If I make it to the top 800, a min cash would be worth around $20,000, and if I run hot it may be a bit higher than this.

I would like to bring back any winnings in cash, I do not want to transfer it to my bank HSBC as I've already had a bank account frozen this year from suspected money laundering (i wasn't, just high stakes gambling at the Prague European Poker Tour where I withdrew and deposited five figure sums in the same month, but Natwest maintain a position of not discussing their investigation with me) and I don't wish for it to happen a second time.

Is it possible to carry $20,000 or more in cash through Vegas and UK customs if I explain the source of the money and the reasons why I'm carrying it?

Can't really answer your question, but we have only ever been asked how much money we are carrying when entering the states...no one seems to care when we are leaving.Even less bothered when we land back in the uk.

Think I'd wait until I made the last 800 before I started worrying ;)

You can take as much as you want, but you have to declare over $10k when leaving the USA, and 10,000 EUR or equivalent when coming back to the UK.

You could always open a bank account there, or send it home via Western Union. Another possibility is a cheque for part of it and the rest in cash.

Good luck. I have a friend who is playing too, but he's American, so doesn't have your potential problem.
