    - The average London wage is £34K, which is a take-home salary of £2.2K.
You didn't say anything about averages in your previous post - an average take-home wage of £2.2K isn't the same thing as "In London (and probably elsewhere in the country) people earn about £2K a month". Many people in London earn nothing but Eden Hazard is reported to earn £1,197,633 a month....

And people don't "allocate" money to alcohol/cigs/socialising. They simply spend it and hope at the end of the month they haven't spend too much (assuming they have the courage to look at their balance).
Again you're obviously generalising, but I was just playing back your comment that "£500 a month goes on socialising/alcohol/cigs. That leaves £500 for eating and clothes", which clearly implies prioritising the former over the latter. Maybe some people do spend their notional £2K in the proportions and/or method you suggest, but it's not a rational conclusion that this is the norm.

I am curious as to why you think I am joking about all the facts I have stated.
Because some are manifestly not facts perhaps?

Although just to be clear I'm not disputing the apparently credible IFS rent stats or that the average take-home pay in London may indeed be £2.2K....

Do you actually have an argument at all? Because you don't seem to be saying anything. You have not disproved a single thing I have said.

On the subject of London wages, I said "people in London earn £2K a month". What is your issue with that statement? It is true. I didn't say "most people" or "all people". It was meant to mean the average. And you'd have to be petty, or not have an argument of your own, to be holding on to that as some sort of leverage in this discussion.

    Again:

    - The average Londoner takes home about £2K.
    - The average Londoner spends 40% of that on rent. (Plus bills on top = more than 50% of their salary gone before they can say boo to a goose).
    - Then many of them (possibly even on average?) spend £500 per month on socialising.

That is why people don't invest. They do not have the money to invest after the above. This is the reality for most people.

As for many people "prioritising socialising over food/clothes", yes many do. Is that a shock to you? They wouldn't say it or admit to it. But in practice, that is what many people do.

The chances of us having the same associates are incredibly remote. And I'm not talking only about people I know (although they are included). I am talking about most people, as I said.

As daft as some people can be (believe me I see that every working day), I still can't believe that 'most' people couldn't point at Germany on a map. Maybe I should test it out on my students.

Responding with "I can't believe" is known as an argument from self-incredulity. Just because you can't believe something it doesn't mean you have a point.

Ask your students if they agree that your lack of understanding a subject is an argument for it one way or the other.

You're in fighting mood this evening, I see.

it was you who made the snooty claims about people's behaviour, but without offering any evidence. It's not for your audience to go out and disprove such nonsense.

I'm not making a point! I'm expressing my disbelief, why are you making such an issue about a bit of banter? If you want an argument, find someone else, I've got better things to do.

I was actually being friendly, thinking that you may have at some point worked on naval ships, like myself. Hence the comment about type 42 destroyers.

I have offered evidence. I have proved an IFS report and quoted the London average wage figures. I'm not going to poll men about peeing on toilet seats, but I notice nobody is disputing me on that.

As for being snooty - it's actually the other way round, if you ask me. What we have here are a handful of people with money and an ability to invest who are criticising the Average Joe for not investing. I am merely pointing out the realities that most are not in a position to invest.

I'm middle class and comfortable, as are most of my associates. But most of my associates don't have a pension or property, let alone "investment". They would think VLS is a either a type of car or an exotic infection.

My point was, and is, that you're generalising by extrapolating some people's behaviour and citing it as the norm. Of course I'm not saying that nobody fits your description, just highlighting that it's invalid to suggest that everyone does, or even that most do.
