Redundancy, quitting & JSA

Hi,

My wife was recently made redundant, but fortunatelt got another job straight away and so had no need to claim JSA. The new job has a six month probationary period, now two months into the new job she hates it.

If she leaves does she get JSA? alo if after the six month probationary period she is no longer in a job does she get JSA?

Any help appreciated.

J

JSA is for people who cannot work, not those who choose not to. So if she leaves simply because she doesn't like the work, she would probably be sanctioned -- there would be an extended period without JSA. However, if she has a good reason, such as being bullied at work or working under unreasonable conditions, she would not be sanctioned. She should seek advice from a union rep on this. Maybe the best would be if she could persuade the employer to give her notice now.

And if she is "let go" at the end of the probationary period, there will be no problems about her claim.

Either way, note that contributions-based JSA is only for six months. Income-based JSA would only be available if you (and anyone else in your household) are on an unusually low income.
