Lancashire to Kent - stopover en route

Hi
We're having a couple of days at the Port Lympne Hotel in Kent next April. We're staying there thurs/Fri night so plan on making it into a longer break by adding a night on either side and stopping en route to break up the drive.
Looking at Google maps we can either take the M6 / M40 route skirting past Birmingham and Oxford or the M62/A1(M) route skirting past Peterbrough and Cambridge.
Any suggestions on places to stop on the way? Cambridge and Oxford seem an obvious choice on the way down and will mean we get the bulk of the driving out of the way but open to any other ideas. Don't want to veer too far off course really but want to arrive by midday on the Wed to give us a full afternoon and evening to have a wander and spend time where we stop rather than just a sleepover spot.
Thanks

I wouldn't bother with a stopover, I'd just have longer at destination.
It's only a 4.5 hour drive from Blackburn to Kent.0 -
We're meeting up with family and just doing 2 nights.
Its a safari / zoo type place so we have safari tours booked for the day we get there and 2 full days in the animal bit too so really don't want to add longer to our stay.
It's during the Easter holidays so we'll have the time to stop over and break it up a bit and means we get to see more places.Lea0 -
Well, in that case definitely Oxford, lots to see. Use the park and ride.0
