Agree with everyone else - the online quotes sound very low!

Try smaller local companies (at either end) rather than the nationals - eg Pickfords are hideously expensive. If you can get a recommendation, great, but it's a bit easier these days as so may companies have online reviews. Take with a slight pinch of salt, but it's hard to fake large numbers of them.

Just to add from personal experience - can highly recommend having the removers do the packing for you, especially with a larger house. Added little to our price (relatively) and we could live in normality till the day before the move. A team swarmed through the day before completion and packed everything (in a four bed house) in just over half a day. We would have spent a miserable few weeks living amid boxes! Cost a few hundred quid but of the thousands spent on that move (solicitor, EA, mortgage fees, remover...), it was the best-spent money of the lot!

My family and I are moving from Brighton to Edinburgh in a few weeks and are trying to arrange a removal firm. All the online companies say they can move us for £1,200 to £1,500, however we have had reps from two companies come to see us and they priced the job up at £4,300 and £4,600.

We are loathe to go with the online companies as we feel they may not turn up on the day, however we think that £4k+ is potentially way too much. We are moving the contents of a 5 bed house to the same up north.

Does anyone have any experience of such a move or can anyone give us some advice on getting the best deal?

    Thanks for any help

Sounds about right. For moving from a 4-bed to a 4-bed within London we've usually been charged about £2,500. Moving to Scotland is obviously going to cost more.

For one thing there's the armed escort and of course insuring against polar bears or woad-painted locals attacking the wagon train doesn't come cheap either, although in the latter case there'll be less left to unpack.

Sometimes you get a low quote because the movers already have a move booked in going the opposite way and they're looking for a paying return journey. A friend of mine recently moved from Aberdeen to the Deep South (Surrey) and found the same as you, some quotes seemed very low whilst others were astronomical. She went for a low offer, the company had all the insurance certificates etc, and it was the case that they were looking to earn some money during a return trip back to the Deep South.
