Finally Debt Free After 34 Years, But Still Need to Live Frugally 24th Sep 17 at 12:22 PM
My DH and I have been in debt for 34 Years, apart from brief periods, ever since I was offered my first credit card at the tender age of19.

Our debts were caused by us being impulsive spenders and not being very skilled at budgeting or managing our money, so we know it is our own fault. We always believed that one day we would have more money, mysteriously, and that this would bail us out .

Our full light bulb moment came when we realised, "What if we never have any more money than we do right now?"

A couple of years ago we were coping with the minimum payments, but didn't have enough to overpay on any of them. We were forking out 1300 a month in minimum payments, and the interest alone was 1000 a month .

But then in 2015 our small business started to bring in less, and a family bereavement, and illness affected our ability to work. We could no longer afford the minimum repayments and we were scared we would lose our home. We were stricken with stress and depression .

Step Change shone a light in the darkness for us and they arranged for us to make token payments of 1 a month to our creditors. This saved our sanity and we were reassured that our home was unlikely to be taken from us.

My DH recently turned 55 and drew out his pension so that we could make full and final offers to our creditors. All but one accepted an offer of 50% of what we owed (which is all we had to offer). We are continuing negotiations with the final creditor and hope to be debt free by Christmas .

Being so close to being debt free has made me realise what a heavy burden the debts have been all these years, like living our lives wearing lead boots.

Once we are debt free we will still need to live very frugally because we have no emergency fund or savings, and our income can be irregular. I hope that starting a diary will help to focus me on frugal living, avoid impulsive spends, and keep my spirits up. Because frugal living can be a lonely and isolating experience.

This site and Step Change has helped me so much, and I hope that my diary will help to inspire others that it's never too late to change your life .

Thank you everyone for thinking of me. Wednesday was a difficult day for me . It just seemed to stir up lots of memories and emotions that made me feel quite tearful. Even school didn't distract me as fully as usual. We met aunt and uncle at a NT place and had a cup of tea there and walked in the gardens and looked at the flowers (my mum loved gardens) which was nice, but talking about my mum and looking at photos of her, whilst lovely, made me feel really sad and I couldn't sleep then for thinking about her .

I broke up from school today. There was a partyish atmosphere with the children watching a film in the classroom while the staff were busy doing last day things like packing up the childrens' artwork for them to take home, etc. I wrapped up thirty clay heads in tissue paper and wrote their names on them for them to take home .

There was a gigantic cake in the staffroom that a parent had brought in. The TA gave me a card and some chocolates as a thank you for helping her all year and I had a lovely card from the class I look after at lunchtime that they had all signed which I'm really pleased with .

I feel very guilty that I didn't take the children a present, but I look after thirty at lunchtime and a different class that I volunteer in, so that's sixty children altogether that I'd have had to buy for. Next year I think I will try to get them something though as I'm going to miss them and I'd have liked to get them a little present each. I could look in the pound shop. I think with my mum's anniversary and the new floor being laid I've had a lot on my mind, but that's no excuse really.

I'm going to miss being at school because it's a lovely community and I really feel a part of it now, so I'm very glad I can go back in September .

Anyway talking of floors, the breakfast room and toilet have lovely new flooring in today . We've never had flooring laid professionally before (apart from carpets) as we've always done it ourselves. It looks absolutely amazing. We chose a laminate for the kitchen that was a colour called concrete which sounds horrible but looks lovely and is laid beautifully. Unfortunately they didn't have enough laminate for the breakfast room as they forgot to allow for matching the pattern, but they're going to come back and finish it next next week.

I'm full of cake and chocolate now and watching a film .
