    Jem it was for tax year 07/08. His tax code was 456L and he earned £11963 before tax

    0653L for year ending 2010
    0609L for year ending 2009
    0503L for year ending 2007

    Lower that it should be yes - it would have been 522L.

    Having a lower code would mean he paid more tax than normal. However there could be many reasons for this such as receiving a taxable benefit such as private health insurance, company car or it could have been an underpayment of tax from a previous year that had to be collected.

    He would normally have received a coding notice explaining the different tax code.

    Each of these higher by £60 so you paid less tax. If they are wrong you owe HMRC tax. You have received an allowance - could be uniform washing or professional subs or something similar.
    0503L for year ending 2007

    This one is exactly what it should have been.

    He wasn't receiving any benefit's and can't think of any reason why he would of had an underpayment, doesn't remember any letters either, but he is male so you never know

    Receiving a state pension or other income that is paid gross but is taxable?

    If none of these apply and he really can't remember then phone HMRC.
