I didn't know I was going to get anything, and I needed a spend of £20 to get 5x points anyway.

But 5x points on a £20 spend is only 100 points but by splitting it, you would have been guaranteed more.

Maybe so, but as I already said I had no idea that the bonus points were being awarded so there was no known reason for me to waste my time splitting my shopping into 2 or 3 separate lots.

Because the customer service received is awful, I'm guessing there is some sort of computer error which fails to awared any points, but the staff should have been able to correct that.

Well it wasn't awful since you were given the reward and apologised to.
Also, why do think every member of staff knows everything and should be able to deal with everything.

If it was a computer issue, this is likely to be A) a technical specialist fixing it, B) A 3rd party software provider and C) not an instant fix in store.

People make mistakes, systems make mistakes, being so demanding and needy doesn't make you right. Personally i think Sainsbury are probably better off without you.

Our petrol station has no voucher printer so you can't win there.

I did not do too badly on sunday - i split my shop into 2 lots of £10 (ok each shop came to a few pence over £10) and each voucher gave me 500 points instead of the 200 minimum. My final shop was a few pence short so I quickly grabbed an onion to take it up to £10. The nice thing about self service tills is you can do this without annoying people behind you in the queue.

I'm inclined to think poor software design (or lack of updates) is the problem. I use Sainsbury's weekly (it's walking distance from home) and they send me bonus vouchers in the post. The self-service tills reject these vouchers about half the time (and I do check I've bought the right thing) so I walk over to Customer Services and they always check the receipt and manually credit the points. (Good) I have asked them to highlight the issue up the line and was told "Oh - it's not us it's Nectar" to which my reply is "These vouchers have a Sainsbury logo in the corner, they are posted to me in an envelope full of Sainsbury advertising with the name of the store manager on it..." So, thanks fryedslyce for that link! I'll point it out next time.
