    Mortgage free by 2023 (!) 9th Jan 15 at 12:22 PM
    Hello,

I'm usually found hanging out on the DFW diaries thread as you'll see from my signature we are still tackling debt..

However, my plan was always to start attacking the mortgage after that, but having just sat down and worked out how much we need to overpay to clear it in time for DH to retire at 65 latest, I think we need to start now!

I still have to focus on clearing the debt as it's on a slightly higher interest rate, but I don't see any harm in starting to overpay the mortgage a little bit here and there as well. I've found a debt free wannabe diary massively helpful in helping me to focus and curb any unnecessary spending, so here I am!

I don't expect masses of activity, but every little bit will help!

We have 14 years left on our mortgage with 118,031.21 left to pay wef today (I just realised I could access this online - will regularly stalk this from now on!) We want it gone by December 2023. We pay 921.60 a month which is effectively my wages - it feels a huge amount as it is, but I know we have to do more.

Would love some company for the next 9 years!!!

1.47 left over this month from food fund so OP made with June now at 331.93.

Cashback has tracked to payable but I’ve had to update my pp details so can’t get at it until early next week probably so it will be a July OP.

Money has effectively ran out this month but there should be no spends today or tomorrow. Saturday we could avoid spends if we really wanted to. Sunday should be no spends.

Feeling antsy today, desperate for payday tomorrow so I can budget fiddle and sort out July.

In less antsy news, the mortgage is now 83,594.08.

Gorgeous day here, but I'm not feeling being out in it at all!

Been brave (or sensible) and cancelled tentative plans for Saturday so it's a no spend day. It wasn't something we were desperate to do and would have meant for a really long day.

It's pay day and I've done the divvying up between pots. Savings are up to 2600. I'm determined to have a lowish spend month.

July is the month I really want to get my head around MB. I keep reading the threads on here but it blows my mind, so if I keep reading, hopefully it will go in soon.

Clock watching until 7am when I can log on to the mortgage for an updated figure as it updates overnight and you can't log in until then!

With the shuffling around, an OP of 50.90 is going to the mortgage making June OPs 382.83.

I need to dig out our mortgage paperwork to double check the percentage we can OP each year without charge, it's either 10% or 5%.

In house news, one that we were watching to see if it was worth going back on the market for did sell at auction yesterday. Appreciate we are probably doing this in a backward way, but just don't see the point in selling unless there is something we like. Another two options in terms of area so might drive out to those on Sunday to see what we think.

Mortgage balance updated with June's payment and it is now 82,736.61. Hoping by September that will read 79k something. Will confirm total OPs for June tomorrow as need to check my manual OP has also gone through and my bank account obviously had a hard Saturday night as it hasn't updated!

Off to flicks today as a treat for the littlies. Hope weather is good for all, it's misty and overcast down here!

    June OP are 382.83.

July OPs started with 21.84 usual OP and also 5.01 from the phone bill.

July OP so far are 26.85.

Will aim for 150 this month but feel that might be a bit of a stretch!

Great June OP's and a strong start to July. How did the 'drive-by' go? It's so stressful even just being on the market isn't it. Hopefully the right viewer and house will come along.

Cheque paid in finally for refund for kids activity - who sends cheques these days! Had to drive 30 mins to the bank to put it in!

4.04 from fleabay sales OP today bringing July to 67.97.

So decision made, we are staying put with the house and will spend a little here to make a few changes. First up is the garden which is fine in theory, but it's my little sanctuary and I would like to grow veg and split up the area in a few sections, so today is moving the water butts which is easier said than done it appears. DH just disappeared to get some important bit so we are taking a break. Lovely weather here today!

Busy day yesterday on 1 poll and nearly at 20 on there, ips0s also busy and I'm not far off payout again.

Updated the mortgage figure as of today to 82,643.62.

Off to a local RHS place tomorrow that we haven't seen, me and littlies can get in free so just DH to pay for and will book it online later as we get 10% off.

Another gorgeous day here. Loads done this morning with the littlies and off to sports soon.

Ransacked my wardrobe to find two pairs of 3/4 lengths I forgot about. Having finally got round to starting a health kick, I've lost 7lb so far. I've chucked out two items of clothing and have a pile to fleabay. Then I did DS tshirts and have another 6 or so to fleabay. Determined my wardrobe will look very different come the end of 2019!

Such a quiet month for OP, did a bit of TT in the account and made an OP of 1.71 bringing July to 69.68.

Should hear about last two PPI claims this month as the deadline for them to respond is near. Not expecting an outcome, but you never know!

Well, update on one PPI claim in that we have success, but frustratingly, I don't know what the offer is and need to wait for the post to arrive!

Another little bonus this week was that DH's pension that he already takes wrote to say they owes us an uplift on the lump sum he took, so that's another 500 on the way at the end of the month. 100 ish has been spent on a new tool that DH needed, but we intend to chuck the rest of that at the mortgage as it wasn't planned for at all!

Mortgage figures reduced slightly to 82,637.87. Not made OPs for days, but I knew this month would be like this..bit frustrating really.

Plodding along with surveys, enjoying the weather...

Fleabay sale means OP of 2.76 sent bringing July to 72.44. The post didn't bring news yesterday so hopefully tomorrow.

Spending the weekend removing numerous slabs in the back garden and replacing it with decking. Needless to say my back is slightly achy this morning.

Well the last 2 PPI claims are done and we got a result on both. First was for an overdraft I had when I worked for a certain bank, the little s0ds opened the account when i started work as you had to have your salary paid into one of their accounts and slipped PPI on there without telling me Now I've never used ODs at all, so the payout is 25 - but hey, it's better than nothing!

However second claim was on a loan from same bank and they did exactly the same thing - 2200!! Over the moon with that.

However we have also decided to spend what money we would have spent moving on the house to make it into what we want, so garden is well underway, but we are due to have builders out this week with a view to making the kitchen, hall and lounge one big open plan area and then taking out the external wall along the back of the house and having bifold doors or something similar so the whole of the back of the house opens up! That's the plan anyway and of course it will depend on cost.. so for now the PPI money is being put away with no OP coming out of it at the moment.

Had our visit from the LA this morning re home ed to make sure they are happy with our provision and that went well, so we will be left alone now until 2023 when kids hit next key stage!

That said, quick tidy up in the bank account and I've found 27.15 to OP so that brings July to 99.59 which now I've just added that up will annoy me a lot that we are that close to 100. Once the bank account updates in the next hour, I'll find 42p somewhere!

Managed a 40.07 OP bringing July to 139.66 from some of the PPI money. Home ed classes are drawing to a close, so we tend to hunker down a bit now over the summer, rest and chill although a few activities are planned.

Builder hasn't appeared yet to do a quote, so I must look for some more options. Typical really of where we live, everyone has so much work, trying to get someone to actually come round and give you a quote is hard!

Pouring down here, but the garden needs it, I'm not impressed at having to put jeans on this morning!

Bit more work done in the garden yesterday.. we need to order a fair few tonnes of stones now. Planters to be built today and possibly three fence panels replaced if we have time.

I cleared out a section of a flowerbed yesterday where everything was looking bleurgh. Looking a bit bare now, but I want to replant it all for next year so will wait for the rest of the plants to go over and then dig out the rest.

Have been reading loads of MB and plan to have a little go this week to see how that pans out.

    Have a lovely Sunday all!

So planters built, fence panels a job for next weekend.

Sold all the slabs we took up, didn't expect to get much but ended up with three times what we expected and were willing to accept, so most of that put towards ongoing renovations, but we gave the littlies 15 each as they worked sooooo hard last weekend helping out. Also did a 15 OP bringing July to 154.66 which I think means I hit our target of 150.

Been thinking a lot about food shopping / meal planning and would welcome any thoughts. We currently budget about 300 per month, I pay mid week delivery saver with TesC0 which is 3.49 a month.

I used to meal plan loads and it was great and I know i need to get back to it properly. We are all trying to be a lot healthier with food choices, I've lost nearly a stone since 1st July so I feel like we maybe need to up the budget a bit, I'm just trying to work out whether I should swop to L1dl to save money, but practicalities mean I can't just nip to a shop as it's a good 15 miles to supermarkets from us. I have very little time as it is with home ed and life. I wonder if we should shop more for the next 5 days type of thing rather than weekly (we always run out of fruit / veg etc. I' m conscious of plastic use, wanting to do more cooking from scratch etc. I'm probably answering my own questions here, but I'd be keen to hear other situations and how you guys manage it.

Day 1 of unofficial summer hols and I've left the kids to get bored, so one is reading and one is crafting.

Done a bit of tidying in the account and sent 16.51 to the mortgage meaning July is up to 171.17. Hub putting the last PPI cheque in today and I'm going to OP that as it's only 22ish.

I've no plans today except spending it under a quilt on the settee, I'm tired and feeling very sorry for myself for no particular reason so a bit of me time is needed.

After ringing docs this morning over 100 times, I finally got through to be told all appointments gone today unless it's urgent which it isn't So frustrating, I can't prebook until the end of August which is too long to wait!

Hi DFOD, great progress to date.

What type of mortgage are you on? I am on a five year fixed, in the last 10 months of it now and then it's renewal time. My terms says 10% OP a year is allowed, but any lump sum payments have to be over 1000 each time.

I did up the monthly direct debit by 25 just to chip away at it slowly, but I would love the flexibility to send the odd few quid here or there as I sell things like you do etc.
