Car serviced and MOT'd - a week later it dies. Oil cap not secured

I'm NOT sure if the two are related.

I got my car serviced and MOT'd on 17/11. On 25/11 I was driving home and the car started making this awful noise. I got it home and opened the bonnet. The oil cap was not secured. My car is now a write off. It's only 6yrs and 65,000 miles and it is unusual for the car to die this quickly. I look after it, it has a full service history, no advisories from MOT so I really don't understand !!!!!! has happened.

I don't know if anyone can help, but someone mentioned to me that it could be that the oil cap was not secure and this caused engine issues.

Just looking for advice

  • Who did the service?
    Have you contacted them?
  • As above, your first port of call should be the garage who carried out the service but there are a few question to ask yourself and which the garage are bound to ask: How many miles had you driven between the service and the failure? How far did you drive on to your house after hearing the horrible noise? Were there any warning lights on before or after the noise started? Oil light? Engine light? Temperature light?

The car started making an awful noise, so you continued driving it until you got home? You now say it's a writeoff? How do you know this? At 6 years old I'd expect it to be worthwhile fitting a secondhand engine from a scrappy rather than scrapping it.

We need a bit more info to give any meaningful advice.

Try taking yours off, drive around for a while and see how much oil you lose*

    Answers to questions:

Miles between service and final stop: 100
1 mile from noise to house
No lights at all from car

The garage (different to the one I got it serviced at), said that the cost of the engine and work is slightly under the value of car (£2700 atm) so said not Worth replacing engine

Question still stands , have you contacted them?

To be honest I don`t get my personal car serviced by a garage (self serviced) but work car is done by garage and I always give the car a once over before leaving the garage(not a very trusting person :)).
What`s the make and model of the car?

Is oil all over the engine bay?
What's the oil level showing on the dipstick?
    What car is it?
