Water retention whilst Pregnant?

Anyone know of any safe & sensible treatmetns for water retention whilst pregnant? I am currently 26 weeks & the last 3 weeks or so have really started to get puffy around my face, just like before my period so I am fairly sure it is water retention not weight gain. However, I have also strated to gain weight on my thighs, I know I should expect this but I was doing so well just gaining "bump" until recently. I don't expect miracles, just wondered if anyone had any tips to minimize the water retention really?

Thanks

The nurse at my surgery told me that water retention is mostly caused by not getting enough fresh water, something about your body holding on to the water because it thinks it's being dehydrated. If you drink more, it gets flushed through.

any swelling during pregnancy should be referred to your GP/midwife - oedema is linked to raised blood pressure, which can result in pre-eclampsia

i would not recommend taking anything for water retention, without first consulting a qualified medical person

HEAR HEAR! Talk to your midwife or GP about any concerns in pregnancy, and if you can't get either of those, phone the hospital you're booked into. NHS Direct are also good at talking through symptoms, and veer on the side of caution, so if you are worried about needlessly bothering your GP or midwife it can be useful to say "NHS Direct said I should ..." !

There should be a phone number on your ante-natal card for the clinic, you could call them , there may even be an after hours number on there for the midwife.
Fluid retention can be quite normal, but as stated above, can also be a sign of pre-eclampsia. Best to get it checked out.
