What most people call dandruff, is simply a dry flaky scalp. True dandruff is a condition akin to cradlecap in babies.

My hairdresser told me that many anti-dandruff shampoos such as Head and Shoulders alleviate the problem while you're using them, but as soon as you stop using them it comes back even worse.

She recommended KMS Daily Fixx Dandruff Shampoo for the itchy flaky scalp, also Redken Dandruff shampoo and I can vouch that both are very good. However, both are expensive and so I'd like to know if there are any other remedies that people can suggest.

Are you sure it is dandruff and not psoriasis?

    Or eczema

My husband has eczema on his scalp and uses Polytar shampoo which is also for the treatment of dandruff

I sympathise and have tried all the shampoos. I have found the best to be alphosyl 2 in 1 shampoo. You will be able to buy it in Boots. It is a herbal medicated shampoo for the scalp. Doesn't have the tarry smell of polytar. I use it constantly and if I run out and use a normal shampoo even for a couple of days I notice the difference. I wouldn't use anything else now. Might be worth a try.

Sheel if you dont see it sitting out ask at the pharmacy counter for it, as they are bound to have it. I have had lots of scalp problems in the past and it was a Doctor who told me to use this, years ago. Touch wood as long as I stick with it, I dont have much bother now.
